I took Band in 8th grade. I sucked. We were only supposed to walk in one parade and I wasn't going to be able to attend for some reason. I dropped my French Horn in the street during practice and the band director told me to go to Study Hall for as long as they were practicing for the parade. I didn't come back until the final. When I showed up the band director said I was going to get an F. But he didn't flunk me. Nowadays the parents would have sued the school district for causing "undue emotional stress" to their child. That does sound tres harsh, though (making you sit out for the practices).

An update.... My son has decided on the oboe. A very difficult instrument, but one his teacher said he "made a very good sound on". We ended up renting from P&M music as we've had good luck with them in the past. Much cheaper rates for the same brand of instrument, too. After one night of having the oboe, he was able to play "Hot Cross Buns" just be remembering what he had learned from his recorder experiences as school. I'm hoping he does well with this. He's excited, so that's half the battle.

I think you should consider yourself lucky if he makes anything close to a "good" sound on it at first eb! I remember the one girl who took on the oboe in my MS band. It sounded like a dying duck for weeks!
