One analyst noted that unless there are DRASTIC custs in spending in coming years, our income taxes will need to double (to 70% or more) to pay for the debt we have piled on. I will try to find the article...it's pretty sobering. can you say 's o c i a l i s m' ?

'Obamunism' may cause economy to collapse 4/24/09 President Obama is exploding the deficit by trillions and then in turn asking his staff to cut a measly $100 million. Isn't this a bit disingenuous? Obamunism may cause the economy to collapse and leave future generations destitute. Exploding deficit has been an issue from 2001-2008. So after 3 months, its "Obamunism"?

It did increase under Bush, but his entire 8 years' worth of increases (which of course include fighting a war) will be less than Obama's first year or two.

The deficit is unacceptable especially when using the % of GDP as a barometer. This cannot continue and will not continue.
What concerns me more is the "attitude of entitlement" that has become so prevalent in the middle class.

Chico....a two-fer....husband and wife tag teaming. ;D Union-supported board voted for teacher raisesBeacon 4/25/09 All school board members take an oath of office and swear to respect taxpayer interests by serving as a faithful protector of the school district's assets. Despite the currently dismal economic conditions with taxpayers in a squeeze for their lives, all of Indian Prairie School District 204's School Board members, with the noted exception of Christine Vickers, recently voted to approve a nearly 4 percent pay increase for teachers. This vote comes within weeks of teachers' union President Val Dranias admitting that the union endorsed and backed for office current board members Mark Metzger, Jeanette Clark, Curt Bradshaw, John Stephens and Alka Tyle. All of these school board members voted to approve this highly questionable pay increase at a time when inflation is running at zero. So, this begs 2 questions: Whom do these school board members really represent? And have these school board members violated their oath of office? How could another school year begin without the Back to School LTE from PW?
District 204 parents have been duped Letter to the Editor Published: 8/29/2009
Ladies and gentlemen of Indian Prairie School District 204, you've been duped. In 2005, District 204 presented to voters a referendum to build a third high school. It was soundly defeated.
Undeterred, the district, along with vendors that did business with the district, mounted a fear campaign to convince voters that a third high school was desperately needed or "students would be sitting on each other's laps."
"Nonsense," said mathematicians and groups like Citizens for Options, which studied the numbers. The district was strongly encouraged to hire a professional demographer to do a proper study of the matter before asking for another $125 million from taxpayers (the actual cost of the high school now exceeds $150 million due to mismanagement on the part of the district).
Instead, the district hired a consulting firm which specialized in "data manipulation" and the district produced, out of thin air, its own model. This "model" claimed that by 2009 enrollment at the high school level would skyrocket from the current 8,965 to 9,365. With cries of "stop overcrowding," the referendum passed in 2006.
To help secure the "yes" vote for the referendum, the district even promised certain school boundaries and a school site, both of which the district changed after securing the vote. The district was later sued over this bait and switch.
Flash forward to 2009. District 204 is finally opening its third high school, and it has just finished counting the number of high school students for the 2009/2010 school year. And what was the actual number of high students on the 2nd day enrollment count: 8,464. That is almost 1,000 students less than the district's so called "model" produced. Oops.
At this point, I guess it wouldn't do any good to say "we told you so."

I don't think 2nd day enrollment numbers are good to go on, especially as some students didn't go until Monday. I'm not sure how a few years ago we could have predicted the collapse of the economy and the number of empty houses sitting around in the district at this point.

Not when the ref. was passed, but there were a lot of signs pointing that way before the HS was built. There was time to stop this whole mess. The numbers the SB sold us on were wrong from the beginning!!

The numbers the SB sold us on were wrong from the beginning!! True, but I for one am happier with smaller high schools all around, and wish that we had never gone the freshman center route in the first place. I don't think these houses will stay empty forever, and we will have capacity for students moving into the district.

The numbers the SB sold us on were wrong from the beginning!! After the BB site was "lost", the entire 3rd high school project should have been re-evaluated not only based on economic downturn but also based on the new site being so drastically different from what was originally 'sold' to voters. It should have been re-evaluated and re-voted on. water under the bridge now, and hopefully lessons learned.

It is getting more and more expensive to live here. Many won't be able to afford the taxes. This district is going to have a difficult time supporting three high schools. Don't get used to 3 small HS, IMO it won't last long due to finances.

By the way, what options are Citizens for Options for?

The problem is it is not a lesson learned- the powers that be would do it all over again even knowing what they know today ( they knew it before they turned one shovel of dirt last time) - And hard to call it water under the bridge when we will all be paying for this for another 20+ years, at a time when we can least afford it...with another referendum coming due and scare tactics sure to accompany it. from that standpoint nothing has changed.
