It's only spring, but seven Crone Middle School teachers already have their short summer haircuts.
And it was their students who did the shaving during an all-school assembly Wednesday morning.
The budding young barbers were the students who raised the most money to maintain Crone's memorial garden, which honors the memory of four former students who died before they graduated from the district. Those students were Jordan Webb, Jovanni Clementi and Will Anderson, who died while they were Crone students; and Kevin Meyer, who died while he was attending Neuqua Valley High School.
"All four students' memories were honored at the assembly to remind the current Crone students of why the memorial garden exists," said Allison Harvey, a reading and social studies teacher at Crone who helped organize the fundraiser. "Each of these (deceased) students has a special award in his name, and students who are nominated (for their awards) have been recognized by staff as being peaceful, strong and good friends to others."
After Crone established the awards to keep these students' memories alive, physical education teacher Nancee Furlan decided to organize the Crone Memorial Garden project to honor them year-round and for years to come.
Harvey said Furlan keeps kids in touch with the memory of these students by involving them in the garden's upkeep. Part of that effort is an annual fundraiser in which students collect money to pay for the garden's maintenance.
"This year she came up with the motivation for them to turn in money by letting the winner shave that teacher's head," Harvey said.
Harvey said the idea worked, as the fundraiser netted $800 for the garden's upkeep
