Does anyone know how 5th grade band is done? Is there some meeting or anything to introduce the kids to band? Or do you just sign up and hope for the best? Can someone tell me the process and what is "required"?

Can someone tell me the process and what is "required"? I can't remember if it is done in music class or they go early in the morning. They all get to try all the band and orchestra instruments and they learn about them and get to rate them as to how they like them.

I remember mine learning about and trying all the instruments in before-school sessions, then coming home with a recommendation based on what the child liked and seemed capable of doing. After that the students have band or orchestra one morning per week and another session during the day on that same day (so they only need their instrument at school once a week).

Well, we've gotten the information and he's attended both before school sessions to get aquainted with the instruments. We have a parent orientation at WVHS on Tuesday. What can I expect at this parent orientation? I'm just excited he's decided to play an instrument again. Too bad it's not the same one we've already had lessons for... Oh well, he'll have some diversity in the musical instruments, so that's a plus. So, seasoned parents...what do I expect at this orientation?

They will most likely talk about when they will have lessons [during the school day once a week] and when the whole band will meet [once a week] for your school. Talk about concerts and required attire. Let you know who to rent the instruments from. They may also suggest private lessons and of course for you to remind your child to practice.
Hope he follows through and enjoys it. Many kids stop band either entering 6th or entering as a freshman. If you go to Still, I can honestly say we have THE BEST MS BAND TEACHERS, EVER.

Don't know if you have an instrument or not...sounds like you don't have the RIGHT instrument. I tried to get both my kids to play my old instrument. No luck of course.
Anyway, if you have to rent, I would say I do like Quinlan and Fabish. If something goes wrong with the rental, they fix it right away. Also, they come to each school (once a week, I think) and can deliver books etc. that you order via phone so that saves on gas. The best part is if your child does decide to commit to the instrument, they offer a 10% off special and give you a further discount/credit on the rental fees you have already paid and you can apply a portion of your rental fee toward the purchase.

One piece of advice I always give is to check the rentals from PM Music. They offer the same deals as the others but they are pretty close in proximety.
One thing to keep in mind, all high schools have students who teach. Private lessons are much cheaper taking from a high school student. Usually, the music teachers have lists from the high school.
My daughter started with a high school student as a teacher, she loved it.

You'll get the Quinlan and Fabish info, as they are the preferred vendor. They have a "trial" program (or at least they did 3 yrs ago), where you can rent for the first half of the school year (many kids drop during this persion), and then you can get on a rent-to-own program if they stay in band.

My daughter started with a high school student as a teacher, she loved it. Yep, my kids loved their HS student teacher. I think the kids make big strides if they have something like this instead of just relying on the once-a-week group lesson. The kids can relate to the HS kids too and it's kind of a mentor/role model thing.

Yes, PM Music had the same deal, 3 years ago of course. I would also check into Brookdale Music, north. I apologize, don't know any music stores south. I am only suggesting to shop around and keep in mind, distance to the rental facility.

We got a trombone for our 5th grader last year from Quinlan & Fabish; worked out well for us and we haven't yet gone to their store. We waited till the end of the year before deciding to buy it.
Middle-schoolers need their instrument every day so we carefully plan out which days to bring it home for practice.

I took Band in 8th grade. I sucked. We were only supposed to walk in one parade and I wasn't going to be able to attend for some reason. I dropped my French Horn in the street during practice and the band director told me to go to Study Hall for as long as they were practicing for the parade. I didn't come back until the final. When I showed up the band director said I was going to get an F. But he didn't flunk me.

Band director thought the kids couldn't handle both music and marching. He would be blown away to hear the MS music program in our district, absolutely amazing.
