Under the Campus Security Enhancement Act signed Friday, schools will have to develop an emergency response plan and a campus violence prevention plan beginning Jan. 1, 2009. They'll also need a campus threat assessment team. State and local emergency officials will help develop the plans and with training exercises. Northern Illinois University President John Peters said it is necessary for colleges and universities to have emergency operations plans in place, including plans to respond to campus violence. A former NIU graduate student opened fire in a Cole Hall classroom on the DeKalb campus last Feb. 14, killing five students before committing suicide. Copyright 2008 Associated Press. Many colleges do have excellent response plans in place at present. On going training exercises should help with the safety of college students going into the future.
