Naperville's North Central College was ranked No. 17 among 137 Midwest colleges and universities that offer a full range of undergraduate and master's degree programs. NCC has made the list for 15 consecutive years and moved up from No. 19 last year. Lisle's Benedictine University was ranked the No. 43 best master's university in the Midwest. Nationwide, 572 schools are considered master's universities by U.S. News and ranked within four geographic regions. Rankings are based on a system evaluating up to 15 indicators of academic excellence, including peer assessment, student quality, student retention, class size, faculty qualifications and alumni giving. U.S. News publishes the 2009 "Best Colleges" edition Monday. The magazine ranked Benedictine University as a top school in the Midwest, seventh in Illinois for master's universities; 11th in the Midwest, sixth in Illinois for racial diversity; as a top campus with the most international students, fifth in Illinois; and in the top half of Midwest schools for economic diversity and freshmen retention rate.
