With its interviews for a superintendent search firm complete, Naperville School District 203's board is about ready to begin the actual search for retiring Superintendent Alan Leis's successor.
The board interviewed five firms last week, and it has identified its top three, whose services would cost between $18,000 and $20,000.
"And we made calls and talked to some folks to just get a sense of any issues or anything that we should be aware of - any problems," said board President Suzyn Price.
So it is now ready to select a firm at its Sept. 15 meeting.
"All things being equal, I think it's a matter of comfort and confidence," Price said of how the board would settle on a firm.
Once the firm is selected, though, the naming of a new superintendent is hoped to happen within about 15 weeks, Price said.
"I think we are looking at January or early February, because then we've got principals (for Naperville Central and Naperville North high schools) to hire, and we want to have a superintendent on board for that," she said.
Price said the search firms all felt very positive about the search the district is set to undertake.
"They really felt that we were in a good position now, that we have a terrific reputation and that we have some wonderful achievements and that board of education is working together well," Price said. "So there's going to be a sense that this is a really good place to come."
Board Vice President Susan Crotty said all of the firms strongly felt that the community should be involved in selecting the district's new leader.
"That was something that ran through all of the presentations - how they would involve the community and how much the community defines what you're looking for," Crotty said.
She said she was impressed by the effort the firms would put in to finding what the community is looking for.
"They want to find the right people," she said. "So if the community says we want somebody that has been through a big facilities update, they go out and they know who these people are, and they recruit them.
"They don't just look at the applications and tell us which are the best ones," she said.
