www.suburbanchicagonews.com/napervillesun/news/1371618,na11_metea_s1.article Burglars sack Metea Valley site againJanuary 10, 2009 By BILL BIRD wbird@scn1.com For the second time in four months, burglars have plundered the site where Metea Valley High School is being built in Aurora, this time making off with more than $40,000 worth of tools. Employees of three companies doing work at the school reported having their tool storage areas broken into sometime between 4 p.m. Thursday and 5:30 a.m. Friday, said Dan Ferrelli, the Aurora Police Department’s media relations director. They told police dozens of tools with a total estimated value in excess of $40,000 were stolen during that timeframe, Ferrelli said. The school is being built at 1801 N. Eola Road, near the intersection of Molitor and Eola roads. It is scheduled to open this fall. Ferrelli said police are continuing to investigate the burglary. He asked witnesses or others who believe they have information about the case to call the police investigations division at 630-801-6655, or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at 630-892-1000. Crime Stoppers offers rewards of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrests and convictions of suspected criminals. The construction site was also targeted by burglars and vandals during the late night to early morning hours of Sept. 15 and 16. The intruders severed a padlock and cut through part of a security fence before stealing two welders and a quantity of copper piping, police said in September. Two construction trucks were also damaged during the break-in. Police estimated the total damage and property loss in that case at $9,900. The 460,000-square-foot school will accommodate 3,000 Indian Prairie School District 204 students upon completion. 2 words: electric fence OK - on a more serious note, the construction site is really set up to provide lots of cover for the bad guys. All of the construction trailers are along Eola, screening a lot of views from the street. In addition, while the parking lot lights seem to have been installed, I haven't seen them on yet. I guess it's up to Turner and their sub-contractors on how to adress this. If it was me, I'd locate the trailors so that they didn't screen the building (and any trucks that are left their overnight), and I'd turn the lights on in the parking lot.

Or hire some security. A few rent a cops making rounds through the night is often a good deterrent.

I can only imagine the outrage if the district had to pay for extra security to deter these types of incidents. All of a sudden, the kids will be going to a HS in a "bad neighborhood", and "if they hadn't moved it from BB, they wouldn't be spending money on additional security, thereby adding costs to an already outrageously expensive school. How dare they waste our money like that!" Or something along those lines.... If these are Turner's (or another subcontractor's) tools, then Turner should look into this. Of course, I'm sure they have insurance for such thefts and maybe this is just part of doing business in their line of work.

The theft of tools are the tool owner's responsibilty, therefore they will have their own insurance...this will not become an added cost to the SD.
These kinds of thefts happen where the tools are at.....and probably would have happened at BB too.
If they need extra security........I know a few Deputy Sheriffs who sign up for that detail.....

I was thinking that the Jr/Sr wing wouldn't be started until after the school opened. Are they this much ahead of schedule?

I'm sure they have to put certain things in place for the whole building and maybe do the smaller stuff like drywall etc. when the kids are in school.

I'm sure they have to put certain things in place for the whole building and maybe do the smaller stuff like drywall etc. when the kids are in school. So it would seem that much of the actual construction -steel beams, concrete and the like - will be finished by opening. What's left will be the "finishing touches" to make it usable when they are ready for these areas? That's not nearly as bad as some are making it out to be. Considering that juniors and seniors won't be using that area until there are actually juniors and seniors in the school, this seems like it will work out just fine. It seems the pool and some other things that were once thought to be opening later are already well underway, as well. Perhaps there will be more things that will be ready sooner than previously thought.
