Last night at WV was the NV/Scullen Transition meeting. I attended it.
Main speaker was WV principal Kristine Marchiando. I would say there were 100 parents there.
I did miss the very start. KM was touching on some "rumors": the festival fight, use of drug-sniffing dogs (same as NV). I dont have much to add on this. KM did say how "99.5% of the students", she gestured to the Student Council reps there to be tour guides, "are just like these students and cause no trouble". She said that is pretty much the same at all schools.
I thought there were some very good questions from audience. In no particular order, here are my notes on the questions.
1. They are planning an Activity Bus for those that stay afterschool for clubs and sports. It would leave at 5:15 and go to Scullen MS. (I know they have same setup now to Hill MS. Maybe Granger too?...I am not sure)
2. A parent asked about Option Period, something they have at NV. (it sounds like a study hall-like period for going to LMC etc). KM said at WV she has this option available during a students lunch period. But there isnt a separate period.
3. A related question....a parent asked about WV not having an Advisory Period, something they do at NV. KM described this as ~15 min period for "business issues, announcements, etc." KM did away with this at WV, but said she may or may not reinstate it. She said "some students see it as valuable, others say its not." She is still considering what to do in future.
4. Fresh center structure at WV: They plan on grouping core Eng, Soc, Math in freshman wing. Using fresh cntr concepts here. However, speciality classes: Science, Electives, etc will be in different parts of bldg.
5. A question about music practice after school, vs. in school. Music teacher addressed this.
6. To be fair and accomodating to those with students at both schools (NV and WV, and also WV and MV) they are working very hard now on coordinating schedules to prevent conflicts.
7. Staff will move in proportion to students moving.
8. A parent asked about how many students will be in bldg next year. The answer is 3100. The most ever was given as 3600. There was a little story here though..It was interesting in that initially KM said WV Green would be at 3500 for 2009-10. A few minutes later, KM refered another numbers question to Rudy Keller, who she said was the person directly working on the numbers issue. Keller was glad to have the chance to speak and he said "I didnt want to step on my principals toes...but the actual number is 3100 for next year." Then the number drops down to about 2900 (I dont recall exact number), and then to the final number of 2700 enrollment.
The question and answer period concluded with Rudy Keller introducing the parents to a Waubonsie tradition on closing assemblies (something he did for the incoming freshmen parents earlier this year). He had us stick out our fists and say "Go Warriors". I thought the parent participation with the cheer was nice and enthusiastic!
Then a 10 min tour of the building was given by student guides.

It left at about 5:30 from Gold and 5:40 from Green, and it stopped at Brooks, Longwood, Hill, and Butterfield subdiv. Living in the northern area, I found it valuable for my daughter, who is in sports.
