Reported by 204-info@ipsd.org on 9/16/08
The City of Naperville has proclaimed September 15 through October 16 as Celebration of Peace Month. District 204 and District 203, in partnership with North Central College and ThinkGlobal Arts Foundation, are participating in this special event.
The celebration features a variety of events and activities open to the community that are designed to spark interest, heighten creativity, and prompt increased dialogue toward building harmony in our communities.
Special highlights include:
Art and essay contests open to all students at all grade levels. Details are online at
Creative Stamp: thinkglobalarts.org/csdcontest.pdf
Peace Poster: thinkglobalarts.org/2008_PEACE_POSTER_CONTEST_RULES.pdf
Essay/Poem: thinkglobalarts.org/essaycontest.pdf
"Arts for Peace" is seeking contributions of new or gently used school supplies such as pencils, chalk, crayons, and scissors that will be sent to impoverished children in Africa's Malawi and Tanzania. Each District 204 elementary school has a collection box. Donations are accepted though October 1.
Robert Thurman, October 1, 7:00 pm at Pfeiffer Hall, North Central College. Time Magazine has named Thurman as one of its 25 most influential Americans. In 1962, Thurman became the first American ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk. He gave up his robes after several years, however, when he discovered he could be most effective in the American equivalent of the monastery, the university. Thurman's work and insights are grounded in more than 35 years as a scholar and a 45-year friendship with the Dalai Lama.
Martin Luther King III will present "My Father's Dream, My Mission," on October 29, 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Wentz Hall, North Central College. The first son of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, Martin Luther King III is a human rights advocate and community activist. King will discuss the motivation behind his father's Southern Christian Leadership Conference and talk about the dedication and spirit behind the quest for civil rights, and why it remains important today.
Panel Discussion on "The Culture of Peace and Harmony," October 2, 7:30 to 9:30 pm at Meiley-Swallow Hall, North Central College. High school representatives will participate in this interactive discussion with distinguished guests, including Michael Terrien, founder of Play for Peace, and Jerome McDonnell, host of Chicago Public Radio's, Worldview.
Film Festival, October 16, 7:00 to 9:30 pm at Meiley-Swallow Hall, North Central College.
