The Midwest Heart Community Foundation (MHCF) Young Hearts for Life Cardiac Screening is a program to identify high school students at risk for sudden cardiac death. MHCF is providing free EKG screening to identify a specific heart condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or HCM, which affects young athletes. HCM is the most common cause of sudden death in young adults. An EKG can detect certain “markers” associated with HCM that a stethoscope cannot. Sadly, over the past several years, athletes from District 204 have been among those lost to HCM.
The Midwest Heart Community Foundation has, to date, screened over 19,000 students free-of-charge in DuPage County. In the spring of 2009, MCHF will, for the first time, be offering these screenings to all District 204 high school students who provide a signed parent consent. Since this program is not funded by the school districts, community support is essential to its success. To help raise funds, MHCF is hosting Heart to Heart at Harry Caray’s in Lombard on Thursday, October 16th from 6:30 until 10:30 p.m. We would love to see District 204 support this special event. Tickets are $40 each and include a live band, appetizers, soft drinks and several wide screen TV’s if the Cubs are playing that evening. Sponsorships, prize donations and program ads would also be greatly appreciated.
If you would like to purchase tickets, make a donation, or help in any way, please contact Karen Patterson at 630-369-3346 or at Perkins12@aol.com or Kathy Marek at YH4Lvolunteer@aol.com.
