Why isn't this all over the news?
All I heard on the 9pm news last night was Rezco, Rezco, Rezco, Obama, Sinkhole.

This needs to be stopped now.
I urge everyone to contact your state rep and Senator to oppose these bills.
I'd even conact Gov. Blago and make sure he vetos it if it makes it thru.

I thought Blago was planning to veto it? Is that the only help we can count on? I can't imagine anyone in DuPage supporting this. For anyone not reading the other board, here's a link to the thread on this topic - ipsd204.proboards76.com/index.cgi?board=talkabout&action=display&thread=1204071807I'll add the new links posted here this morning over there.

Great, my state senator is Linda Holmes. She was very receptive the last time I contacted her.

Thanks for raising awareness of this ! While G-rod allegedly is against raising the income tax, I personally wouldn't trust that. Mike Madigan's understanding that businesses' creation of jobs and thus tax revenue might be a more reliable roadblock to these tax-swap bills. In any case, please urge your state senator and rep to do whatever they can to defeat SB2288 & HB0750. It scares me to think that people NEVER learn that the gov't usually is NOT a good steward of OUR money (lottery, casinos, tollway, etc etc etc)

It scares me to think that people NEVER learn that the gov't usually is NOT a good steward of OUR money (lottery, casinos, tollway, etc etc etc) I am especially not a fan of the ideas to "sell" the lottery or the tollroads for long-term (20 yrs) deals, with one big payout now, but nothing longer-term financial plan. Talk about mortgaging the future.

An e-mail I received this afternoon -
Organizations needed to endorse Senate Bill 2288
Senate Bill 2288 is moving quickly in Springfield. We need your help!
Senate Bill 2288 provides a fair, sustainable, and permanent revenue source for schools, property tax relief for homeowners, protection for low-income families, and funding for needed capital improvements. A+ Illinois endorses this bill as an important start towards solving Illinois' school quality and fiscal crises.
We need to show state leaders in Springfield that communities across Illinois support comprehensive school quality and funding reform. A+ Illinois is collecting endorsements from both individuals and organizations. Please add your organization's name to the growing list of those endorsing Senate Bill 2288.
* CLICK HERE to endorse SB 2288 as an individual. * CLICK HERE to endorse SB 2288 as an organization.
While we will continue to accept endorsements in the coming weeks, A+ Illinois hopes to collect as many endorsements as possible by April 1. Can we count on you?
If you would like to print out an endorsement form for your organization to sign by hand, please click HERE. You may email, fax, or mail back your signed form.

How is this bill fair? It isn't fair to most of us here in 204.

How is this bill fair? It isn't fair to most of us here in 204. I don't support this bill because I think it will raise my taxes and cost 204 money. That being said, I think the "fair" part of it comes from leveling the playing field for communities across Illinois. Currently there can be great inequities between the "haves" and the "have nots" in terms of school funding. Given that low income students are already facing an uphill battle when compared to upper income students in terms of achievement, I can see how at least giving them an equal shake at school resources would be construed as "fair." I haven't done research into how our state funds vs. other states or how our achievement at the district and state level compares to states with a different funding model. It is an interesting problem. Given how well things are going in Illinois in terms of budget balancing, turning our school funding entirely over to the state isn't something I want to have happen. ALL the schools statewide might get screwed.

ALL the schools statewide might get screwed. I don't believe the schools in low income or low property value areas are actually funded at low levels, they just receive more $$ from other sources. I don't think this plan will help low income students except for if their parents wind up with more $$ if the formula for paying more in income taxes and less in property taxes somehow helps them. If the state gets this, they will be playing Robin Hood more than they do already and we know they have infinite ways of messing it up.

E-mail those same legislators we were being asked to mail earlier in the week to let them know what you think. They'll be glad to hear something different from people in 204...

I joined the e-mail list for this group just to get updates on the bill, but for some reason I just can't bring myself to get on nsfoc's e-mail list... I guess there are enough people to keep me updated with what's going on there.

I have a friend who is a teacher in Chicago public high school. She teaches PE and has 60 students to one teacher. No assistants or "helpers," just her and 60 sweaty kids. She said the same thing. The state will take away other monies the school is already getting, everyone's income tax will go up and nothing will change on the property tax bill. You gotta love the way things are done in Illinois.
