While we all know there are some things that MVHS won't have upon opening day, there are other opportunities that this new high school brings to our students, faculty and parents. This is not intended to be a pro/con list, but simply a discussion of the opportunities that lie ahead for the district.
One of the more obvious things that comes to mind is the relief from overcrowded schools at the MS and HS level. I would think students, parents and faculty would all be happy about this.
Another is the opportunity for kids to form new friendships with students they might not otherwise have had a chance to meet.
Anyone else want to add to this?

I think it would be kind of neat to be a sophomore and be the "big man on campus". I don't see what the big deal is about the school not being complete for a few months. Naperville Central is going to be under construction for many months to come. Kids are pretty resilient. When Gregory Middle School flooded a couple of years ago, they had to send the 6th graders to Peterson for a few weeks. Yep, it was an ES that wasn't adapted for MS students, science labs etc. From what I heard, the kids thought it was an adventure and loved being the first students into the building. They had to take busses to Gregory, get off and be counted, and then take another bus to Petersen. Not to mention the teachers had to move all of their stuff I would think. Inconvenient? A little. The end of the world? Hardly. I think there are many positives to being the first class to graduate from the HS, even if they have to make a sacrifice or two in another area.

I was talking to a friend of mine and her daughter is part of the class of 2012. I asked her if her daughter had any misgivings about going to MVHS and being only freshman and sophmores there. She said her daughter and her friends are very excited to be the first graduating class at MVHS. I had also read about all the talk of not having a homecoming, etc. and she said they are having a fall dance and that it will basically be the same thing as anyone else's homecoming. Apparently, there will be some type of football game (fresh vs. soph? - although I'm not sure), as well. It sounded like they won't be "missing out" - at least this was the daughter's perspective. One thing she mentioned too, was that since she will be the first graduating class, she will also be the first class to "come home" when MVHS does have a homecoming. They seemed pretty excited about that as well.

I am sure there are a number of kids excited to go to the new school and be a part of the initial class. My son is in the class of 2012 although be will be at WV. He is very excited to go to a smaller school. I have been hearing too many comments from a few people about how terrible it will be at MV for the first class and how they will be getting screwed. There may be a few difficulties but for the most part it will be very positive.

There may be a few difficulties but for the most part it will be very positive. It's nice to hear that your son is looking forward to going to WVHS. To hear others talk, no one wants to leave NVHS. I think that some of these "difficulties" can be opportunities for these future adults to problem solve and be creative in their post HS lives as well. It seems like we tend to give our kids so much and want to solve so many of their problems for them - that's just human nature - but this is a great opportunity for these kids. Things won't always go their way and life's course is not set in stone. If they don't learn how to adapt to changes early on, they will have a difficult time in their jobs, their relationships, their marriages, their families. While I understand some parents' disappointment and frustration at the change in events, it simply boggles my mind to hear their "solutions" and their negativity. What message does that send to these students? Certainly not a good one. Back to opportunities....I think another plus will be for some of the great educators in these schools to have an opportunity to chair a department when they otherwise might have had to wait for the opportunity at their current HS or move out of the district for this position. I think the staff that will head up MVHS will be one of the best. If someone from WVHS or NVHS takes a position at MVHS, this only leaves room for someone else to advance at WV and NV. I see this as growth for these teachers and our district.

There will be a lot of leadership opportunities for these kids. As I understand it, there are going to be a full slate of clubs and teams and they're going to need leaders.

My son and I talk about the vast opportunities that await the classes of 2012 and 2013 at MV. They will have the starring roles in the plays, they will have the leadership roles in all of the clubs, they will have the best spots in the band, orchestra, and chorus. Many of these are normally reserved for the upperclassmen. They will have to step up, take charge, and shape the clubs and organizations in the new school. Kids will have a greater chance of making a sports team than they would have at either of the other high schools.
I agree that having fall festivities that are not called "homecoming" is no different from having one that is. The fall dance will not likely seem different than the homecoming dances held at WV, except that they should have fewer attendees since there are fewer students. While there won't be a varsity football game, I'm sure there will be something in its place.
I was glad to find out that MV will have a gym and locker rooms when it opens and that some of the fields are being prepared this fall so they will be ready for use next fall.
