This came up last night during our presentation. Apparently, the middle school teachers have to have "endorsements" in these other core subjects. While their specialty might be math, they must also be endorsed in social studies. That's the way it was explained to us at least.

I was somewhat disappointed to learn that as a 6th grader next year, my child won't be able to take art if he elects to take BCO. BCO will take up the entire year, as will PE/Health and then he will take Computer I and then Computer II. In the scenarios presented, there was not art option in 6th grade for students taking BCO. That's very disappointing as he enjoys art and is very good at it as well.

I am not happy with everything I see there, either, but it appears we can't have it all...

I thought about that and will probably look into that. I do like some of the things that were mentioned - less transitions, for one, which will help my guy. Since we're going to be new to middle school, I guess there aren't a lot of "changes" for us to get acclamated to. It will all be one big change for us. He's already interested in the foreign language aspect, but if he's doing BCO already, that will be a very rigid schedule if he continues that into 7th grade. I'm happy to see him excited about FLEX - of course, he's interested in Chinese...isn't that one of the hardest languages to learn?

There's a sample option 1 for BCO students that has them taking Computer 1 in 6th grade with 2 options and Computer 2 in 7th grade with 2 options. It's only the kids taking language AND BCO that get messed up with no options. And he could take art one quarter and the FLEX the other quarter. Edit: Oops, never mind. mt4 said on-line that 6th graders in BCO can't take FLEX. I don't see why not. Maybe they have to take Appl Tech and FACS before taking any other options?

It looks like the students who want BOC and foreign language take Computers I and II in 6th grade and have no other electives while in MS. They do not take study skills, they do not take FLEX, general music, art, applied technology, FACS or any other elective. I don't think that getting a slightly earlier intro to foreign language would trump the value of taking some or all of these other classes.

I would agree. Now tell that to my child who really, really, really wants to take foreign language, specifically Chinese, in MS. My question is what if there are not enough students interested in Chinese and it is not offered (a possibility that was explained to us the other night). Can they then go back and choose other electives or are they "forced" to take a different foreign language. This could change the whole "experience" for some kids.
