District 204 needs to change course
Published: 3/29/2008 12:09 AM
Next month, it will be three years since voters told Indian Prairie School District 204 "NO" to the idea of a third high school. But the district, undeterred by the vote and confident they could overturn the will of the voters, hired The Center for Community Opinion (CCO) to do just that. The CCO "surveyed" residents, surveys paid for with taxpayer money.
Then, using the results of these surveys against the residents who paid for them, the district set out to flip the vote by using scare tactics about overcrowding and split shifts as well as a carrot promising no tax increase.
But these deceptions weren't enough. The district wanted to ensure the yes vote, so the district went on a road show, promising certain boundaries based on a third high school site called Brach-Brodie. Now, two years after the district flipped the vote, the facts are starting to come out.
We now see that elementary school enrollment has declined the last two years in a row and the district has backed away from the high school enrollment numbers used to "sell" the referendum. The district now projects that high school enrollment will peak in 2011 and then decline. In fact, their latest projections show that in a few short years, enrollment will be back down to the same number of students that we have today.
But, the district isn't done wasting your money yet. Now the district is going to blow millions fighting district residents who are starting to see through the district's deceits. The district now wants to change the boundaries and the location of the third high school to a site surrounded by high voltage power lines on two sides and railroad tracks on a third! In addition, the site could be possibly polluted from a peaker plant.
Will the district stop at nothing? It's time to move on. The district should admit its past failings and apologize to the public. At a minimum, they need to cancel the third high school because the facts show there is no need.

What a refreshing, new perspective! Well you know what they say, if you say it enough times it becomes the truth.

Letters to the Editor

Naperville should settle with Dick Furstenau
In June of 2007, after he was found not guilty of hitting a Naperville police officer, Councilman Dick Furstenau asked only for an apology and discipline of the officers he believed to have falsely arrested him. Later, the then Naperville city manager put out a great deal of derogatory info on Dick Furstenau in the paper at the behest of some City Council members.
The city manager then quits and receives a payment of about $100,000 from these same City Council members. When was the last time you quit a job and your boss gave you a bonus for leaving?
This case has already been lost by the city due to that payoff that was made. This case needs to be settled ASAP to avoid wasting more taxpayer money.
I haven't seen anything this dumb since the City Council voted to bail out the Millennium Carillon with millions and millions in taxpayer money.
Okay, maybe District 204's "quick take" was dumber, but we don't expect anything too intelligent to come out of District 204 headquarters these days.
At least the City Council isn't trying to build an empty and unneeded school building on PCB contaminated property at a cost of $200 million to taxpayers.

Very creative. Haven't seen PW come this far out of right field to slap D204 in ages.
Guess he had to find a new way to get his "D204 is wasting millions of dollars for a school that isn't needed" LTE published.

In the Wisconsin town my wife grew up in there was an individual remarkably like Paul White. Only everyone called him 'Knocker'. He 'knocked' and objected to everything. He was at every city council meeting objecting to something and in some cases winning. Nowever nothing he ever did was in the best interests of his neighbors and he was never known to have a constructive idea. Sounds like Naperville has their own 'Knocker'.

Unneeded high school will be a boondoggle
Now that Midwest Generation has told District 204 it will not sell its property to the district, it is time to once again step back and review the facts. In the last two years, District 204 elementary school enrollment declined by 284 students.
The 850 student Peterson Elementary School is still half empty even after the district closed another elementary school.
Enrollment at Neuqua Valley High School will peak in 2010. Districtwide, high school enrollment will peak in 2011 and then decline.
More than 600 students expressed interest in taking course at COD Frontier instead of the two main high school campuses. There is no issue with capacity at the elementary or high school level.
The district needs to accommodate some extra students at the middle school level.
To accommodate these students the district should either get some additional portable classrooms or build a middle school on the Brach-Brodie property.
The third high school was and will never be needed.
If built, it will be a $150 million boondoggle and an ongoing burden to taxpayers for years and years to come.

You asked for it, Chicory.........
Here's a good use for D204 buildings
Let's look on the bright side of District 204's overbuilding campaign. We can always turn some of District 204's empty school buildings into homeless shelters for the thousands of families who will no longer be able to afford their homes due to the district's skyrocketing property taxes.

Wow, very short. Paul must be getting carpal tunnel syndrome. I guess you can only repeat yourself so many times.
Maybe the Sun has told him to limit his rantings to 50 words or less.
The fact that they have to use this guy over and over again for this point of view should tell you something.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I wonder if this old buzzard has anything else to do besides moan about the new HS. SInce he doesn't have kids supposedly the needs of the district don't apply to him. Probably reads the papers and these boards all day while chewing on his gums.

Ummmm.....No mention of D204 ?? How can that be??
5/4/08
What will happen after the rebate?
I get a fair amount of compliments due to my letters to the editor, but I was wrong about George Bush's handout in the form of "free money." China won't be the only beneficiary of President Bush's free money.
I have crunched the numbers and Americans will benefit from receiving a portion of their own money back; at least for a day or two.
What will happen a year or two after that may not be pretty.
The Long Emergency has begun.

I think Mr. White needs to take a happy pill. I wonder what it is like to live in his household every day. And we all know about his knack for crunching numbers.
