Then the staff at Gregory has some explaining to do, if allowing things to keep occurring.

Agreed, but I don't recall any of the other speakers bringing up the incident that happened the day after. If other parents who claimed to know these parents who were there in support of them and their son, one would think that someone would have mentioned it. I know their minds were on the worst incident, but it is somewhat surprising that no one brought it up. Everyone seemed focused on the one sexual assault incident.

If other parents who claimed to know these parents who were there in support of them and their son, one would think that someone would have mentioned it. I know their minds were on the worst incident, but it is somewhat surprising that no one brought it up. Everyone seemed focused on the one sexual assault incident. I've been keeping my eye on the ipsd web site, for the video of the SB meeting. It's up now: board.ipsd.org/Pages/Meetings.aspxI watched the whole meeting. at 57 minutes in, there is a discussion between SB members, mostly CB trying to present his ides of guiding principles, and MM telling him that he's out of order (JC backed MM by saying that they SB members has agreed to a certain protocol in the closed meeting & CB was not following it) at 1 hr 12 minutes, public comment begins Having seen the latest information today about an alleged ON SCHOOL incident, I listened carefully to every speaker. The boy's father spoke first and he did say that the boy was assaulted off school property AND on school property. Odd that the on-school information only came out today. Most of the other speakers were Gregory parents & most wanted action ASAP. Based on their reactions, I think it would be a reasonable response for ANY parent at ANY school to say "I don't want the attackers in school or class with my kid". So then, where does that leave the district? Where are these alleged attackers supposed to go? What the biggest fear from the SD/SB/Admin might be is: will the SD/SB/Admin be breaking a law if they kicked the kids out of 204. During the SB exchange (at the 57 minute mark), they brought up consulting with the SD lawyers.

Thanks for that review of the video WP.
OK if the on school event was discussed like it seems it was, then action should have been taken by the admin.
What are they waiting for?

Thanks for that review of the video WP. OK if the on school event was discussed like it seems it was, then action should have been taken by the admin. What are they waiting for? To be clear, if you weren't listening closely to the father's words, it would have been easy to miss the on-school part. Most people in public comment seemed to be focusing on the main off-school assault - I didnt hear one person say anything specific about the on-school incident. The father was the only one to mention on-school, and it was almost in passing. I thought about this a little, and I wonder if the on-school incident, which was supposed to be the day after the other incident, was some type of fight that broke out & perhaps there's a challenge in determining who started the fight? If student A starts a fight with student B and student A ends up getting hurt, who's at fault? Who should face school discipline?

Do you mean kick them out of 204 completely or move them to alternative schooling within 204? (I could be wrong but I was under the impression there is a school for problem kids that is operated by the district.)
Considering that the police deemed there to be enough evidence to charge the two kids with felonies, I can't see how the district would be running afoul of any laws.

www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=273200&src=76This was updated last night.....Pressure mounts as new charge filed against District 204 student By Justin Kmitch | Daily Herald 2/18/2009 Pressure is building on Indian Prairie Unit District 204 officials this week after a misdemeanor battery charge was filed against an 11-year-old Gregory Middle School student already accused of sexually assaulting a classmate. The school board previously was scheduled to address parents' growing concerns Monday night, but now that session is expected to be even more tense than anticipated. Charles Pelkie, spokesman for Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow, confirmed this week that the misdemeanor battery charge was filed against one of two preteen Naperville boys accused of sexually assaulting a classmate last November in a home off campus. The alleged battery took place at Gregory Middle School, 2621 Springdale Circle, the day after the alleged assault, authorities said. Two Naperville boys from the school, a 12-year-old and the 11-year-old, already faced charges of felony counts of criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual assault. According to police, the first incident occurred Nov. 11 in an unsupervised home. During the past week, school board members have heard from the victim's family and other parents urging them to remove the accused attackers from Gregory, where all three boys are classmates. But district officials and lawyers have maintained there is nothing they can do because the initial incident took place off school property. The latest charge may provide the district with more leverage, though, because the incident allegedly occurred in school. District 204 attorney Jack Canna did not return calls to his office Tuesday and Wednesday and Superintendent Stephen Daeschner could not be reached for comment. District spokeswoman Janet Buglio, however, said board members hope to address several of those issues Monday. "The board is scheduled to meet Monday night with legal counsel to review policies and state law regarding student discipline as it relates to this matter," Buglio said Wednesday. Late last week, state Rep. Darlene J. Senger, a Republican from Naperville, proposed legislation that would allow school districts to transfer students accused of committing felonies into alternative educational programs. The victim's father wrote in an e-mail correspondence Tuesday that his son was attacked inside the school in the battery case, resulting in the new charges. "Yes - my son was assaulted in school as well," the father wrote. "The school district has been aware since it occurred, and yet the superintendent has failed to act."

www.suburbanchicagonews.com/beaconnews/news/opinions/letters/1437882,2_4_AU19_LETTERS_S1.article BEACON LTE 2/19/09Parents and communities needed to change things Regarding the "Victim unprotected after alleged crime occurs off middle school campus" viewpoint by Sherry Tatar: I find it disturbing that a three-column article by Sherry Tatar would malign Indian Prairie 204 School District for honoring the rights of every student in its school district. Even the title of her column states that the crime is "alleged." Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? I agree that a primary concern for parents is their children's safety. Why do people regularly think that school districts don't have this same concern? Parents want to send their children to school for six-plus hours a day and think that nothing cruel, mean, or unkind will be said or done by other children to their child. Can the School District refuse to enroll students for saying mean things or allegedly committing a crime? No! Indian Prairie School District 204 is abiding by the law. And they do have policies in place to quickly address issues when a student has committed a serious crime or harmed someone in the district. Can the parents of the victim voluntarily remove their boy from school? Yes! Can the community stand up against criminal student activity and demand that the parents of the boys charged with felony sexual assault remove their boys from school? Yes! I agree with Sherry, "we need to find some common ground between the law and common sense." Suggestions: Respect and honor the law and the School District that is appropriately honoring it as well. Then, stop complaining about how someone else needs to do something, and go talk to the parents directly and tell them that families will not tolerate or allow this horrible behavior to be in their schools or community! One doesn't have to break laws to converse with someone in a calm and direct way. It's time that parents, families, and communities stop complaining and blaming and do something -- that's what changes things! Sarah Underhill Aurora

OK I broke out my trusty PDA and pulled up my calendar.......... Nov 11 was a Tuesday. The event was reported to have occurred during a sleep-over---During a school night? ----- So apparently all these boys were friends enough to sleep over at each ohers homes..(Including the victim). I think I need to see some parental admissions of responsibility also....From all involved......
Now again I do not have the gory details on what happened, nor do I want them...I get enough of that at work.

The old Indian Plains elementary school is where they send the problem kids. My wife who substitutes in the district was there once. From what she described there were kids at Indian Plains who fit the description of the two in question. They could have easily transfered those boy there until the trial.

I also don't believe Indian Plains is equiped for middle schoolers.

The accusers lured the victim over to a house during the day. They are not "friends" but rather acquaintances.

I too had heard the sleepover story. I guess you just can't believe everything you hear.

Does anyone know what she's trying to say in this letter? I'm not entirely sure of her point. It seems like she is saying that concerned parents should confront the parents of the accused to get them to remove their kids from the school, but maybe I'm reading it wrong.
