Almost Home Kids will hold its first Poppa-Palooza Barbecue and Music Festival on Father's Day Sunday at the Historic Roundhouse in Aurora. The family-oriented event will feature live musical and comedic entertainment, golf contests, food, auctions and more. Proceeds will support Almost Home Kids in Naperville, a not-for-profit organization providing services for medically fragile children and their families. Tiffany Crowe, external affairs coordinator for Almost Home Kids explained that the event was the idea of radio personality Steve Cochran and comedienne Patti Vasquez, regular performers at the Roundhouse and avid supporters of Almost Home Kids. Father's Day was a natural choice for the date, as barbecue, golfing, music and comedy all naturally please the typical dad. The most important component Crowe said is that the event helps kids. "Money will be used directly to support our programs providing care for children who are medically fragile," Crowe said. Transitional care, which is Almost Home Kids' largest program, provides clinical care and recreation during the time that children are transitioning from the hospital, back into their own homes. The respite program provides up to 14 days of care for children whose parents are tending to personal or family issues. "Fundraising is critical. It's what keeps the doors open," Crowe said. "We get funding from the state and then we have fundraising for the rest of the expenses. The parents do not pay anything." Almost Home Kids is the only provider of services in Illinois, using a community-integrated model. This is important Crowe said, "Because the caregivers, usually the parents, are learning to care for the child exactly as they're going to have to provide form them at home. We use the child's own equipment and what we do mirrors what they're going to be doing at home. And our homelike environment is more conducive to growth and development and well being, not only for the kids, but for the families as well." Poppa-Palooza will take place from 6-10:30 p.m. Sunday at America's Historic Roundhouse, 205 N. Broadway in Aurora. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $25/adult and $10 kids ages 12 and younger. Entertainment will include Steve Cochran, Patti Vasquez, Mike Toomey, Mark DeCarlo and music by Old Blue Eyes. For advance tickets call 630-264-2739.
