We found out this week that Brooks is moving their meet and greet to the first 45 minutes on the 1st day of school. In years past, we did it a few days before school started. I think they are trying to be considerate and not cut further into vacation time since we are starting so early, but logistically, this raises all kinds of questions for me.
Are other elementary schools doing the same?
Has anyone done this in the past? Did it work ok? Did the kids ride the bus or did you drive them?

During the past 10 years I have had a child at White Eagle Elementary they have only had a "meet and greet" recently... and I am fairly sure it was for kindergarten only .
When each of my 3 kids went to Kindergarten there was no "meet and greet" . The first day of school for the kindergarten kids was only 30 minutes or so and you came with a parent for the entire time. They staggered the times so that you met your teacher with your Mom or Dad with you and only a few other kids and their parent too. (The 2nd day of school was actually the first time they went in by themselves.) I thought this was nice as it was a good chance to meet the teacher with only a few other students in the room. The teacher would sit with the kids and read them a book about starting school. We could then talk with the teacher very informally and tour the classroom. I always thought it was very sweet and low-key. (And I cried like a baby at each one!)
For the rest of the grades...
About a week before school the kids can look on the front door of the school to see their class list and pick up pre-paid school supply boxes.
Other than that, from my experience, from 1st grade on I have never heard of an official meet n greet.

That's interesting warriormom. We have the scheduled time slot meet and greet for kindergarten, but we've always had a 1 hour window for 1st thru 5th where we go in, meet the teacher, drop off the supplies for those that purchase their own or pick up the PTA bag and start labelling for those that buy the supplies that way. This way, on the first day, the kids know where their classroom is and what their teacher looks like. For the 1st few days of school, all the kids line up by classroom out on the blacktop behind the school and then file in en masse. It seems to ease the 1st day of school anxieties for those that have them.

Since my oldest, who is now in 8th grade, has been in school Young never had a meet/greet. Kindergarten met for about an hour on the first day in small groups with parents as well. The rest of the school lines up on the black top by class and files in. Parents get to go and help kids bring in supplies and get settled in. Parents have until 9:30 and then need to leave the building.
This year we are having an ice cream social on 8-18 in the evening but no word if teachers are going to be there. They did tell us some BMX rider will be there. Kind of confused how that has anything to do with back to school.

Brookdale has changed their meet and greet this year to the first day of school as well, right after the opening ceremony. (Used to be a day or two before school started). I think it's a great idea to do them both on the same day.

The Ice Cream Social at Young is a way to welcome kids back to school, see familiar faces and maybe meet some new kids. The teachers have the option of attending but, since this is an after work hours event, it is entirely their decision. The BMX guy is purely for the kids entertainment. This is a new event @ Young and hopefully will be enjoyed by the kids

Ours is the week after school starts this year. We have done this for several years. kjm - I am curious about the opening ceremony at Brookdale. Tell us more! I didn't know there was such a thing. I suspect Brooks will be absolute chaos on the first morning having all the parents in school as well as the students and parking will be crazy. We won't have to give up a summer afternoon for Meet & Greet but it's always been nice for the kids to already have their supplies set up and have seen their classroom and met their teacher prior to the first day. I think it helps calm first day anxieties for some of the kids.

momto4 - Opening ceremony is just what they call it - all of the parents gather in the parking lot and the kids are lined up by class waiting to go into the building. The principal comes out and introduces the new teachers and gives a little speech/pep-talk. Everyone says the pledge of allegience together and they sing the school song. It's not that big of a deal, maybe 10 minutes, but most of the moms leave teary-eyed!
