February 23, 2010 District 204 Schools Make the State Honor Roll for Academic Excellence The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and Northern Illinois University (NIU) announced today that 18 District 204 schools received the 2009 Academic Excellence Award as part of the Illinois Honor Roll. The Academic Excellence Award recognizes schools that have sustained very high academic performance over at least three years. District 204 is second only to Chicago Public Schools in the total number of schools receiving this honor. State Superintendent Christopher Koch will present the award to District 204 principals on March 12 at May Watts Elementary School. Academic Excellence Award winners include: Crone Middle School, Gregory Middle School, Clow Elementary School, Brookdale Elementary School, Spring Brook Elementary School, May Watts Elementary School, Steck Elementary School, Patterson Elementary School, Brooks Elementary School, White Eagle Elementary School, Graham Elementary School, Cowlishaw Elementary School, Kendall Elementary School, Young Elementary School, Welch Elementary School, Builta Elementary School, Fry Elementary School, and Owen Elementary School. NIU worked with ISBE to establish criteria, identify winners of the awards and administer the Illinois Honor Roll. Award winning schools achieved at least 90 percent of students meeting or exceeding state standards in reading and mathematics for at least three consecutive years.
