www.suburbanchicagonews.com/napervillesun/news/2396562,2_1_AU16_JOBSTUDY_S1-100616.article Study: More jobs require degree June 16, 2010 From Staff Reports By 2018, some 64 percent of jobs in Illinois will require a college education, a new Georgetown University study says. This will be a slight increase from 2008, when about 63 percent of Illinois jobs needed a postsecondary education, said the study released Tuesday. However, in terms of population growth and real numbers, this means Illinois will create 418,000 new jobs for college graduates between 2008 and 2018, but only 38,000 for high school dropouts. "Instead of asking whether everyone needs to go to college, we should be asking if we can produce enough workers with high-level degrees and credentials that meet the demands of the 21st century economy," said Jamie Merisotis, CEO of the Lumina Foundation for Education, which funded the study. The study says there will be 2 million job openings created by 2018, either through new jobs or retiree replacements. Of those, 1.3 million will require college degrees, 530,000 a high school diploma and 203,000 open to dropouts.
