Topic: Sophomore swim requirement for physical education
All District 204 sophomore students participate in 9 weeks of swimming education while in Physical Education. As sophomores, students will take one semester of Physical Education and one semester of Health Education. Students will complete the swimming course during the semester in which they have Physical Education.
Our goal for our students is to insure that they are water safe when they leave the program. For students that are more advanced in swimming we provide instruction that introduces water activities that may be new to them including kayaking, snorkeling and basic water rescue.
Our instruction is most beneficial when students of similar swimming abilities are grouped together. In order to group students together, we will be administering a swim test during the first days of the semester in which Physical Education is taken. Students will need to be prepared to be in the water on the second, third and fourth days of that semester. After testing is complete students will be split into ability groups. Some will remain in the pool for the remainder of the quarter while others will attend our sophomore Physical Education classes. The groups will switch topics after a 9 week period.
Students are responsible for supplying swim suits and a towel. We ask that swim suits are family friendly as this is an educational setting. The use of one piece bathing suits is preferred. Other items you may like to bring could include goggles and swim caps. Each student is responsible for supplying their own lock for securing belongings. We will have locks for sale at school for $5.00 during the first week of school.
If you have any questions you can contact the Aquatics Director, Luke Payette, luke_payette@ipsd.org or the Physical Education Department Chair Kevin Chaffee, kevin_chaffee@ipsd.org.
We hope you have all had an enjoyable and healthy summer.
