D204 picks newcomers as Tyle narrowly misses By Susan Frick Carlman scarlman@stmedianetwork.com Apr 5, 2011 10:44PM
Two new faces appeared on their way to the board table in Indian Prairie School District 204 after the polls closed.
Unofficial results indicated board President Curt Bradshaw was given another term by the electorate, while it appeared Vice President Alka Tyle was narrowly defeated in her bid for a second elected term. Mark Rising, himself edged out by a handful of votes when he ran for the board two years ago, had a slim 1 percent lead over Tyle as The Sun went to press.
Newcomer Lori Price drew a comfortable vote margin early in the evening, and by 9 p.m. was feeling that with more than 20 percent of the votes in the five-way race going her way, victory was within reach.
“It looks pretty good,” said the District 204 Indian Prairie Special Needs PTA president, who is eager to focus her efforts on advocating for all of the District 204 community.
“I’ve always maintained that we’re one district, made up of four communities,” she said.
She also will be investigating some of the board’s recent decisions and how they came about, and whether the board’s current goals are still a good fit.
Appointed in June 2005 to fill a board vacancy, Bradshaw, 38, ran for his second elected term with these goals comprising his platform: improving student performance on state learning standards, equalizing performance district-wide, building “21st century skills,” providing solid stewardship of district resources, and having a strong focus on students and the community.
“I’m humbled and honored to be able to have the opportunity to continue serving the community,” he said.

Look at total, combined voting results. Candidate Bradshaw Price Rising Tyle Tilloston
| Dupage % 26.99 21.84 19.05 17.62 14.51
| Will % 25.68 20.46 19.55 18.63 15.68
| TOTAL % 26.40 21.22 19.27 18.07 15.04
|
Turnout percent was also virtually the same. Dupage directly gives it: 10%. I couldn't directly see it on Will (yet) but applying the Will Co 204 registered voters from 2009 (which was 31,546) and assuming the same votes per ballot as Dupage (2.4), you get Will Co at about 12% turnout. Both counties voted identically, and at very nearly the same rate (or had same "apathy level")

The turnout was indeed dismal in many voting areas. Nice to see Lori and Mark coming on board, I suspect they will compliment the board well. And of course for the Napertukians it is great to see Mayor Pradel win, thus able to retire on his own terms.

Disheartening to see so much Apathy. The voting stations were as empty as I have ever seen them anywhere I have lived. Agree with you SSSM, its nice to see some new folks on the board....

Voter turnout was lower than low for this election. I know a number of us worked very hard to get the word out about the election and how to get more information about the candidates and how and where to vote early, yet interest remains low. Local elections are so important!

I fully expected Curt to be the top vote-getter and Tricia to come in last, and didn't really know what might happen in the middle. I think I expected Alka to be re-elected based on her multitude of endorsements, she and Curt running their campaign activities together, and a number of e-mails that went out to lots of people endorsing just Curt and Alka. Though I was initially hesitant in my support of her four years ago, I attended and watched this year's forums and spoke to her in person and Alka is very impressive. She has really put her all into her role on the school board and I believe that her unique perspective, experience, and expertise will be missed.
I am very happy that Lori was elected and solidly in 2nd place. It is interesting to note in this election that the two non-incumbents who won seats on the board are both extremely active PTA people who have attended nearly every board meeting for several years who both have a background in business.
