DuPage County group hails Naperville teens

Five teens attending District 203 and 204 high schools were among the top finishers in the 2011 DuPage County Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics competition, earlier this year at COD. More than 85 students from 29 area high schools competed, earning 45 medals.
Gold medal winners from the local competition will travel to Kansas City, Mo., from July 7 to 11 to compete in the National ACT-SO finals. The national finals are scheduled July 20-24 in Los Angeles.
Local winners, their medals and categories include:
Metea Valley — Alyssa Thomas, gold, photography; Jordan Grant, honorable mention, voal music/classical
Naperville Central — Najera Rogers, silver, poetry
Naperville North — Sharad Crosby, silver, biology-microbiology, and honorable mention, drawing; Sirena Crosby, bronze, dramatics, and honorable mention, photography
Neuqua Valley — Morgan Gathe, gold, music instrumental/classical; silver, music instrumental/contemporary; Jasmine Washington, gold, poetry; Carter Jordan, silver, dance; Samuel Washington, bronze, engineering; Termayne Harper, honorable mention, music vocal/contemporary; Darlene Okafor, honorable mention, medicine/health
Waubonsie Valley — Andrea Bryant, gold, biology-microbiology, and silver, music instrumental/classical; Nicole Oguike, gold, original essay; Sydney Shavers, silver, photography.
Eligible participants include African American high school students who are citizens of the United States, enrolled in grades 9 to 12, and retain amateur status in their categories of competition.
