Quinn to sign Aurora charter school bill Wednesday
Beacon-News Staff July 11, 2011
Governor Pat Quinn is expected be in Aurora Wednesday to sign a bill that would create a new Fox Valley charter school focused on science and math. The proposed STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) school would serve up to 500 third- through eighth-graders from the East Aurora, West Aurora, Indian Prairie and Oswego school districts. The school would be run through Aurora University and would draw students based on academic ability. Teachers from the four districts would be selected based on their math and science skills, and Aurora University students also would participate in the classroom. Each district will be allotted the same number of student spots at the partnership school, according to the bill.
Original plans called for the school to open in existing space on the Aurora University campus for about 200 students for the 2012-2013 school year, to be followed with construction of a new building in 2014.
The bill requesting the charter school was introduced by state Sen. Linda Holmes, an Aurora Democrat. The bill was passed by the Senate in April, and sent to the governor June 16. The details of when and where Quinn will sign the bill were not available Monday, but it is not expected to be open to the public.
