Jefferson Middle School could gain six mobile classrooms

As Jefferson Middle School prepares to welcome almost 300 sixth-graders next school year, finding the space to put them is a top priority.
So the six mobile classrooms the district is considering on school grounds sound like a great idea to Principal Patricia Cross.
“I would be able to give teachers classrooms who haven’t had rooms” in years, like the school’s drama teacher and some special education teachers, Cross said at Monday's West Aurora School Board meeting. The mobile units, which are already in place at four elementary schools in the district, would add temporary space at Jefferson to ease overcrowding. Jefferson is expecting 292 sixth-graders for the 2008-2009 school year, bringing the student body to 892, Cross said. That would make the middle school the district’s largest in entrollment but smallest in square footage.
“You haven’t lived until you’ve been at Jefferson Middle School during a passing period,” Cross said, noting how jammed with students the halls get.
The proposed six units would be connected into one large structure near the school’s entrance on Plum Street, Assistant Superintendent for Operations Pete Kerl said.
While the moile classrooms have a reputation for being drafty, Kerl said officials have not received a lot of complaints about the temperature in other mobile classrooms.
Superintendent Jim Rydland said that while mobile classrooms are “not our preference,” they could serve as a temporary solution. The district received two bids on the construction of the six units, one for $434,930 and the other for $543,499. Kerl plans to make a recommendation on the construction work to the board at the May 19 meeting, and the board will vote on the issue then.
