Good luck to the NV boys volleyball team and the WV girls soccer team, who both are in the state quaterfinals today.
The NV boys play at 5PM today at Hoffmand Estates HS, and the WV girls play today at 4PM at North Central College (might start a little later than that, due to weather delays of an earlier game).

Warriors lose captain but make semifinals
By Gary Larsen | Daily Herald Correspondent Published: 5/31/2008 12:03 AM
A captain was lost, but Waubonsie Valley's ship still navigated its way to a state semifinal.
The Warriors fought through the loss to injury of captain and Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year Bri Rodriguez in Friday's Class AA girls soccer quarterfinals, winning 1-0 over Maine South on a Rachel Bostick goal.
"That goal was for Bri," Bostick said. "I wanted her to be able to play the next game."
Waubonsie Valley (24-0-1) plays Normal West (27-0) at 11 a.m. today in a semifinal game. Downers Grove South (21-6) takes on Belleville Althoff (23-3-1) in a 9 a.m. semifinal.
Waubonsie Valley controlled play throughout against Maine South (20-3-4), earning a 23-6 edge overall in shots against a feisty Hawks' crew at North Central College in Naperville. Waubonsie's lone goal came in the 51st minute on a Bostick header off a feed from Vanessa DiBernardo.
DiBernardo -- who moved from forward to midfielder after Rodriguez left the game with a knee injury in the first half -- took a corner kick in the second half that set up Bostick's goal.
A Maine South defender cleared the corner back to DiBernardo, who calmly settled it and looked up.
"I saw a (defender) coming, so I just tried to get it up to Rachel," DiBernardo said.
After sending a few head shots wide of frame in the first half, Bostick made her third attempt count in scoring her 13th goal of the season from 8 yards out.
"I was getting a little upset, because I haven't really scored in a while," Bostick said. "I was hoping to get one in this game, and I was glad Vanessa was able to get me the ball."
Maine South's best chances of the contest came thereafter, with Waubonsie goalkeeper Claire Hanold tipping a shot over the crossbar in the 66th minute, and another Hawks' shot banging off the crossbar in the 72nd.
"The first shot was a good header, and I was just glad that I got up and got it," said Hanold, who earned her 20th shutout of the season.
Afterward, Rodriguez was off to the hospital to have her knee checked, and with her status uncertain for today's play, a Warriors squad ranked third nationally knows what it will take to beat seventh-ranked Normal West.
"This is state, and we need to play like we're at state," Hanold said. "We just have to go out and fight for what we want."
"It's a lot harder playing without (Rodriguez) because she's our go-to girl," DiBernardo said. "I'll try to play that (midfield) role without her, but it'll be hard.
"We'll all have to do our best."

Neuqua prevails over Glenbard East
By Kevin McGavin | Daily Herald Correspondent Published: 5/31/2008 12:03 AM
Something had to give.
Glenbard East and Neuqua Valley came to the boys volleyball state quarterfinals with identical 36-3 records and a combined 28-match winning streak.
The teams played a three-game marathon earlier this season, but Neuqua Valley exacted redemption in the timeliest fashion.
The Wildcats broke free from ties on 8 consecutive points with a 3-point burst that culminated in a 10-5 match-winning run.
Sean Harmon, who had a match-high 35 assists, served an ace to close out the Rams' 17-match winning streak; the Wildcats (37-3), third in state last year, prevailed 25-21, 19-25 and 25-20 Friday evening at Hoffman Estates High School.
Neuqua Valley faces Buffalo Grove (30-5), which dispatched Oak Park in two games, in the second semifinal this morning.
"We have a lot of experience going into that third game," said Neuqua Valley outside hitter Jake Blackman, who led the Wildcats' attack with 13 kills.
But it was on the defensive end that Neuqua Valley rose to the occasion.
The Wildcats' Derek Menendez was the unsung hero. The junior had 8 kills and one-third of their 18 blocks to stem the Rams' ferocious attack.
"(Glenbard East) has two really good setters in Dan Mader and Mark Jones," Menendez said. "Our whole game plan was to take them away. We did an excellent job of playing defense."
In the decisive third game Glenbard East (36-4) scored the opening 3 points to resume its second-game resurgence.
Menendez had back-to-back points to forge the first deadlock since early in the first game, and the teams traded ties on every point between Nos. 9 through 15.
The Wildcats' Brian Clark and Blackman had kills during the critical 3-point burst that gave Neuqua Valley an 18-15 lead, and the cushion was extended to 22-17 on a vicious Rob Bauer kill.
The Rams' Tim Lovik, who led both teams with 17 kills, had consecutive points to bridge the gap to 22-20.
But Bauer and Collin Adler restored the Wildcats' lead with consecutive kills to set up the Harmon game-winner.
"I couldn't ask for a better bunch of guys my first year as a head coach," said Neuqua Valley's Erich Mendoza, whose team defeated Naperville North and Naperville Central in the sectional. "We've literally gone through the (DuPage Valley Conference, of which Glenbard East is a member) to get here."
"I still think we're under the radar," Clark said.
Neuqua Valley had 12 kills and 6 blocks to highlights its first-game victory, but Glenbard East never trailed after scoring the opening 5 points of the second game.
Mader closed out his sterling career at Glenbard East with 33 assists and 5 kills.
"We played our hearts out, but it just wasn't enough," said Glenbard East coach Marci Maier. "It was a fantastic match, back and forth, back and forth. I thought Neuqua Valley played a heck of a match this evening."

I found out that Bri Rodriguez will not be able to play today for the Lady Warriors . That's a big blow, but they have a lot of talent on the team, and the rest of the ladys will just need to step it a notch.

I have known Bri since she was five years old (she was dynamite then!). Do you know why she won't be able to play?

Waubonsie Valley wins 2nd consecutive Class AA title
By Gary Larsen | Daily Herald Correspondent Published: 6/1/2008 12:08 AM
There was junior Rachel Bostick, hoisting a girls soccer state title trophy high over her head. There were senior sisters Jessica and Hillary Blake, walking off the field side by side with their arms around each other's shoulders.
And there was Waubonsie Valley junior Bri Rodriguez, grinning and limping around the mad, postgame celebration of a state title win she couldn't play in due to a torn ACL suffered Friday.
"I'm extremely proud of them. They all played awesome," Rodriguez said of her teammates after the Warriors won their second consecutive Class AA title at North Central College on Saturday.
"Next year we'll try for the three-peat."
Naturally, as it is after a team state title win in any sport, there was hugging. A whole lot of hugging.
"It's just a different kind of good," said Jessica Blake, in comparing Saturday's 3-0 win over Belleville Althoff with the way she felt after last year's state title win.
"It feels great to repeat it, and it feels so awesome to do it going out as a senior."
Five minutes into the game that ultimately kept Waubonsie Valley (26-0-1) unbeaten in 58 consecutive games over two full seasons, junior Kiki McClellan pounced on a ball 10 yards out and scored the game's ever-important first goal.
"It gets you pumped up, but then you have to keep in mind that you can't get lost in that," McClellan said. "You can't get too excited or too cocky."
Warriors sophomore Vanessa DiBernardo -- a two-year starter who has yet to feel the sting of a single loss through the first two years of high school -- gave her squad a 2-0 lead with a perfectly placed shot inside the far post from 20 yards out.
Megan Green nailed the door shut on Althoff in the second half, running down a through ball from Jessica Blake and going far post in the 48th minute.
In the three games of the tournament, which included 1-0 wins over Maine South and Normal West, the Warriors earned a 54-15 edge in shots, showing an attack that might have been lacking the state's best playmaker in Rodriguez but didn't lack bite.
"We knew that if we played as a team, we'd be fine," Blake said.
Fine is also the word that describes the blue-collar work of outside midfielder Ali Stahlke this year, as well as the defensive threesome of Jessica Price, Hillary Blake and Mary Wright.
And anchoring it all this weekend was junior goalkeeper Claire Hanold, who posted 3 shutouts, made a pair of pivotal saves in 1-0 wins over Maine South and Normal West and posted her 64th shutout, putting her fourth all-time in Illinois.
When it was over, there was Bostick, who was a force on the field this season, reaching for words to describe the girls in back.
"I can't say enough about Claire Hanold," Bostick said. "And I don't have words to express how good our defense played this year."
