I prefer to buy the school supply kits when available, but this year the only one available for my kids was for my grade-schooler, who would prefer to choose her own supplies (I bought the kit anyway).
I bought a bunch of really inexpensive school supplies this weekend at Walmart (great sales but they didn't have everything) for my high-schooler and middle-schooler. We found a few more items at the office supply store right by it.
We are having a hard time finding heavy-duty paper 2 pocket folders with brads (needed in several colors). My child likes the ones that come in the school supply kits (which weren't available this year) and does not want plastic or vinyl folders. Does anyone know where we can find these?
Or where to find a decent quality accordian binder? I bought a plastic one with 8 sections but these don't usually last the whole year.
We are also trying to determine whether PA geometry really needs a TI-84+ calculator as opposed to the TI-82+ we already have. I have an e-mail in to the teacher but haven't heard back yet.

They have them at Office Max. They cost more but last and the zippered enclosure keeps everything in even if one of the file sections rips out. The one I have bought in the past also has a zippered pencilcase area on the front where the kids put their pencils/pens, etc.

We purchased an accordian binder last year, I think Staples. My daughter is going to use it again this year. The dividers are a heavy duty clothe/plastic material. Very good, more expensive. It is worth it. I had gotten one similar at Office Depot or OfficeMax the previous years for my son. They are worth looking for. I have a similar question about the calculator. The school supply list from Still lists that calculator but doesn't specify which math classes need it. She is in accelerated, not PA math.

It turns out that my oldest will not be needing her TI-83+ this year so that one should work out ok for the middle-schooler's math class.
I was at Meijer with a friend at lunchtime because she needs a TI-84+ for one of her kids as well and today is one of those 15% off if you use your Meijer card days. However, they didn't have the Silver edition in stock and she decided it was worth the extra $$ to get that one so will look elsewhere.
I got some paper folders with brads (2 each of 5 different colors as on the list). They'll do but they aren't nearly as sturdy as the ones that come with the school supply kits.
Oh, I also got a large and sturdy Jansport backpack yesterday at the office store (is it Office Depot? the one by Walmart on 59). We always have trouble finding good backpacks for the 20-30 pounds of stuff the older kids need to haul back and forth and have even wound up ordering online a couple times.

My kid did the PA Math through Jr. High and continues the path now into H.S. at WV. They used the TI-84+ for PA Geometry because it graphs. I think he needed it for options in Honors Alg. II / Trig. as a Freshman as well. They do Honors Math Analysis as a sophomore and I don't even know what this is. The calculators are pretty pricey! Definitely on the "don't lose this or else" list.

That message apparently didn't get through to one of my kids in time. One Friday afternoon while rushing out of Granger to get to the bus on time, with her arms full of heavy backpack, jacket, instrument, etc. the pencil case that didn't fit in the backpack and contained said calculator and all of her school supplies was apparently set on top of the lockers and accidentally left there. Instead of going into lost and found, this case was either kept by someone who found it or more likely thrown in the garbage by the custodian (according to the school staff, that's what they do on cleanup). So at this point we have already bought FOUR TI-8x+ calculators. Ugh. I am hoping he can use his sister's TI-83+ .

Last year before school started the calculators were on sale. I got my son his, and told him I was buying the first one...he would be responsible for any others in case it became lost. He did lose the first one, and ended up paying more for the next one as it wasnt on sale. He almost lost the second one.

Speaking of backpacks, how do kids backpacks barley make through the school year. All three girls have to get new backpacks because they have holes in the bottom. I usually do not buy real cheap ones, but not $50 ones either. I have used the same backpack as a diaper bag for all 4 kids (say about 2 years a piece~8 years) and not a hole in the bottom. Why can't kids backpacks last that long? Of course my 6th grader says she needs something "different" as a book bag. Not sure what that is, but if her clothing ideas are any indication, this should be very interesting.

Most kids need a very sturdy and large backpack for MS and HS. They're much easier to find this time of year than in the spring when I was looking for a replacement backpack. I think Land's End, LL Bean and some other places have some that can be ordered online and/or from a catalog. It's worth investing some money in one that will last multiple years instead of one that will need replacing before the end of the year.

I used Jansport backpacks in college and have bought them for my kids. They seem to hold up very well. Last year I got them at Sports Authority. Check there, they have a pretty good selection.

Books are usually much heavier than Diaper supplies, and said books have hard corners. After a while those corners cause wear......Once a hole starts.....it's all over.....

tinyurl.com/58apypGot this for my son as a Sophomore. After 2 years of pounding, it looks as good as new starting his senior year. The wider padded shoulder straps help too... it's not just for laptops

Now, don't laugh to hard, but what do the middle schoolers do with their school supplies? Do they bring them to school on the first day? I can figure out the accordion file folder and notebooks. But when you need 2 packages of pens, a box of markers, Post-It notes, etc, they do not have desks to keep that stuff in anymore. Do they keep it all in their locker?
If you have been through this, I'm sure it sounds funny. I know there is some sort of gathering in August where we pick up gym shirts and buy gym locks, maybe that's when we find out. My 6th grader does not know what to do with her supplies either.
Ok, you can laugh now. It is kind of a funny question.
