At Hill, there were always times to go before the first day to decorate/organize your locker (among other things).

I believe we got the locker assignments and supplies early- we do the PTA supply thing (I think it's mid August this year) and that's when we "practiced" opening our lockers. That was a big concern for my kids. You are then able to put your supplies in that day. We also bought magnetic mirror, and other cool things to put inside the locker to personalize it. I also brought a marker for labeling stuff with their names as we didn't bring the things home. We just did everything in one day. I think they also have tours of the school given by the student council kids.

Make sure your kids know that the first week of school, everyone is very patient with the locker thing. At my kids' school, the teachers are there to help them if they can't get it open. Between getting the locker open and a 3 minute passing period, this was the most stressful thing for my kids.
ETA: In 6th grade they get their class schedule early too I think. We went around and found all their classes and did a practice run that day too. Beats learning it the first day of school with all the kids in the hallway at the same time.
