www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=233618&src=76Dist. 204 unanimously picks volunteer to fill board seat By Justin Kmitch | Daily Herald Staff Published: 9/9/200 12:12 AM Longtime district volunteer Cathy Piehl was appointed late Tuesday to the Indian Prairie Unit District 204 school board. Board members interviewed six candidates and discussed the selection in a process that lasted more than five hours before unanimously selecting Piehl. Board President Mark Metzger said Piehl "brings to the table" skills and talents that complement the current board members. "Cathy is a longtime resident of District 204, a mother of children in our school system and a longtime volunteer," Metzger said. "Most recently she has done a great deal of her work with the Parent Diversity Advisory Council and the dialogue circles that group has sponsored for the past several years." Earlier this summer, 24 residents applied to fill the district's vacant seat. Late last month, the board narrowed the field to six based on resumes and letters submitted by the candidates. Former board member Bruce Glawe announced his resignation from the board Aug. 6. to spend more time with his family and his need to spend more time with his position as the president and CEO of a local bank. Glawe was first appointed to the seven-member board in 2004 and was elected in 2005 to serve a 4-year term. During the application process, Piehl indicated she would serve the rest of Glawe's term, which would expire in April 2009, and seek to be re-elected to the seat at that time. Piehl was no longer at the meeting at the time of her selection and was unavailable for comment.

Congratulations to Cathy Piehl. I have heard great things about her from a friend involved in PDAC.
I am sure she will look at the district as a WHOLE when making decisions.

Congrats to Cathy, and a big THANK YOU to all the others who threw their hats in the ring for the district. Being willing to take on that kind of commitment in service to our community is awesome regardless of the ultimate selection.

No complaints here. Piehl is a fine choice and I am happy the MW area is getting representation on the SB. From what I know about her she is for all the kids in the district and will add a positive spark to the SB. I also believe she will easily be elected this fall.

Yes, this is good news. She seems fair and balanced and has great credentials. We do need some fresh faces to bring us into next year.

I have heard great things about her. Looking forward to watching her work on the board. Sounds like her experience will be a plus to the SB. Hmmm, does that make her rubber-stamped puppet because she was selected by this board or do you think others on various blogs and boards were wrong about the selection proces? I am sure they will apologize for the rude and obnoxious words expressed about one candidate in particular.

On the Blue Board they are giving grudging respect but are upset the south in under represented. You can never please some people no matter how good she is.

On the Blue Board they are giving grudging respect but are upset the south in under represented. You can never please some people no matter how good she is. If that's how they feel, then they should put their names on the ballot and show up to vote in April. That's their chance to address their "under-representation".

Got this in my in-box as D-204 E-news but thought I would post it here.
At its September 8, 2008 meeting, the Board of Education unanimously voted to approve Cathy Piehl as its newest member. Piehl was one of 24 applicants who applied to fill the vacancy created when Bruce Glawe resigned last month. Piehl will fill the remainder of Glawe's term, which expires in April 2009.
A trained school social worker, Piehl has been an active volunteer in the district. She has served as a member of the May Watts and Waubonsie Valley PTAs and the Indian Prairie Parents Council. For the past two years, Piehl has served on the Leadership Team of the Parent Diversity Advisory Council and led the group's Dialogue Circles program.
Board President Mark Metzger said as a long-time resident and volunteer, Piehl has formed solid relationships with the community. "Cathy has developed relationships throughout the district, including in some areas the board has not reached. Her talent and relationships are valuable additions to the board."
The board will formally seat Piehl at its September 22, 2008 meeting.

Interesting choice of words. I heard she has a smaller child and a senior. She looks to be truly objective in moving the district forward. Maybe she will be the missing communication link the south needs.

This comment shows blatant disrespect for the principles on which our country and most democratic governments are set up.
No matter how qualified someone is, it is unfair for a region to not be represented fairly. I have nothing against the new appointee, and she could be extremely competent. But there is a reason every state has two senators, that cities have alderman for different districts. We don't simply select the best people.
I agree that the place to rectify this is in the voting booth. But it scares me to hear people support the SB's apparent opinion that it's okay to create imbalanced representation as long as the person chosen is qualified.

Actually, the most qualified candidate for a SB position doesn't represent an area. In our case, the SB represents 29,000 students. Where they live does not matter.

Sorry I have to totally disagree.......The SB is elected from "at large" which means they are elected by people from all over the dist. There would have to be defined areas and candidates from within that area would be the only ones able to run.....If that's what you would like to see, you will need to get it changed....Good luck......Sounds like a good idea.....

Ditto. How many subdivisions do we have? Can we have 150 board members? No. Gosh, if you got a WE rep to represent the SW, you would still have unhappy people because their subdivision wasn't represented. I too believe it is sad that the south is underrepresented. I see it more as NV is underrepresented but that is my opinion. The SB does represent all people but if you feel a member is not doing that, then you are free to vote them out when the time comes.
IMO one of the best criteria for a board member to have is that they are able to look at the district as a whole. I think we got a great person to do that in Kathy Piehl. She is well qualified and will I hope be fair and objective and look at the best interests of the entire district.
