Charles Vladika of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3873, has announced this year's VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary "Patriot's Pen Essay Competition." Students in grades 6 through 8 have the chance to compete in the annual essay competition and win thousands of dollars in U.S. Savings Bonds. Students begin by competing at the local post level. Post winners advance to district. District winners compete in the state competition. The state winners compete for more than $91,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds. Each year, more than 100,000 students participate in the competition. Students are invited to write a 300 to 400-word essay on a patriotic theme. This year's theme is: "Why America's veterans should be honored." The deadline for student entries is Nov. 1.
