Yes, there IS homework to talk about over the summer!
My freshman has two books to read, and write papers on, for 9th gr honors English. She is reading My Name is Asher Lev and the Color of Water.
Not so much for homework help, but maybe more personal enlightment (I get to really enjoy the good papers she writes!) I try to read some of the things the students read.
I read My Name is Asher Lev and found it to be a brilliant book. A great story centering around the conflict of a parent and a child.... btw what the father expects out of a son's life, and the very different expectations the son has for his own life. Really a great novel, with lots of parenting insight that really makes you think!

My little sisters are going to be freshman at Lockport HS. THey have to read the book 30 seconds over Tokyo. THey are not in honors Why is the reading assignments only for Honors level? I think it should be incorporated into all levels to get the kids reading and sharpening their skills. I know Eastern Illinois University has their freshman reading a novel together

My child in Granger has summer homework this year as well. I would prefer the kids not be saddled with any summer homework at all if they are doing well in school. It would be nice if they could have a break from homework for a couple months.

Over the coming summer, students can read selected novels, take a comprehension test during the first week of school, and earn extra credit points to be added to the first quarter grades. Each test will be 25 questions long. To earn points a student will need to score 18 correct answers. A student may take one, two or three tests. The tests are given on one day during the first week. No make-ups will be scheduled. A Break with Charity -- Ann Rinaldi That Quail, Robert -- Margaret Stranger And Then There Were None - Agatha Christie

I like the idea of giving a reading assignment for extra credit over the summer. Encourages reading but doesn't punish those who don't have a means or support to do it. ETA: I should add, those who don't have the time or desire. Not everybody wants to read assigned books over the summer.
