Does anyone know what the EXPLORE test is? I just got an email from the school saying my 8th grader will be taking this test.
I seem to think it is a somewhat fun test where you then learn what you might be good at in terms of a possible career? Am I off base?
What exactly are the results? Is it "You are destined to be a rocket scientist or a garbage man" or is it just basic vague results like "You would excel in a science field." ?

It's basically the precursor (or eighth grade equivalent if you will) to the A.C.T. They claim the results are somewhat of a predictor as to how a student will perform on the ACT. I think it's basically just giving some insight as to what interests the student in combination with his/her strengths.Sophomores take the PLAN test today at WVHS. Here's a helpful link.. www.act.org/explore/ and the student scores link actstudent.org/explore/index.html

Thanks for the link sardines. Very interesting. Kind of nice to know. If you do poorly in one area, it might be nice to work on that area before taking the ACT's.

Thank you sardines, it has been a few years for me and for the life of me I couldn't remember the point of these tests. Do you know if the results of the EXPLORE test used for placement in high school, honors classes, et cetera? Is that another set of tests?

I remember being told that it was something they looked at in regard to honors placement along with teacher recommendation, classroom performance and other recent test scores (ISAT?). Ultimately the parent can decide if they don't want their kid to take a certain honor's class. Not sure if you can put your kid in one if not recommended but I probably wouldn't opt for that route anyway. Of course there will be exceptions to every rule, but I think it's kind of "setting the kid up" for problems in my opinion. Better to focus on the strengths. ;D

When my son was in 8th the focus of many was who got in to what honors class. My son tested in and was recommended for several honors classes and it was not a good fit. Took him out of the classes, he was much happier and did much better.

I spoke to someone at our middle school today about this test. She said that the test is not as important as ISAT and some of the other testing they do, but would help determine placement recommendations for next year's classes as well as give some idea of what professions may be a good match for the student. There will be make-up testing time available for students who miss the test.
This is good to know because last year I found out that there is no making up the PLAN or PSAT tests. My daughter and my nephew missed those tests for my grandfather's funeral. Now my son may miss tomorrow's EXPLORE for the funeral of my grandfather's sister.
