Has anyone ever sent their child on the 8th grade Washington D.C. trip? I was wondering what your child thought about it? Was there time to even learn anything with two days of travel and one day of sightseeing?
I have heard the kids have a great time. Just wondering if it is worth the money. We are debating whether to just go and see it as a family one of these summers.

We have not had a child attend. The year my son would have attended was shortly after 9-11 and we were very nervous. To be honest, I don't recall if they offered it or not.
We had the same discussion in our house and wondered if for the price it is worth it. Our child was given the choice of a percussion camp or Washington D.C.. She opted for the percussion camp.

My daughter went last year. She really enjoyed it, and got a lot out of it.
I think there are several things that make the school trip stand out, as opposed to a family vacation. The teacher's really "get into it" (as well they should!) and really add to explaining the sites and importance. Another example, is the middle school gets to present a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown soldier at Arlington. Some truly unique experiences that I believe the students will always remember.
I would encourage you to consider your child making this trip.

We've been there twice as a family - once for a day and once for a few days and I would recommend this as a family trip as well. PM me if you want additional info about our trips. There is so much to see and do, most is free and much within easy walking distance from the other sites.

Right after 9/11 so A LOT was not accessible and security was extremely tight. We went for a day and there is no possible way to see it all, especially with all the museums. Never sent my son, but will probably send my daughter next year. Has to be cheaper than that People to People trip she wants to go to in Australia, China and whereever else I am sure they will be offering.

Of course, a lot of friends were going so that helped You would not believe everything they see! It is exhausting however. Take GOOD walking shoes (there were actually girls in flip flops in January..I know) and a warm coat with layers they can adjust as needed. At one point they had to stand outside for some time and some kids only had a sweatshirt and froze.

My wife & I each went on 8th grade trips to DC and we still have some memories of that, so that's probably swayed our decision. The pricetag is a little hard to swallow, but it is all inclusive, and they do see a lot. They will leave early, early Saturday AM, tour a lot on Saturday after they get there; tour a lot on Sunday; and tour a lot on Monday before coming home.
