Condolences are pouring in for the family, friends and classmates of Adam Miller, 5, of Bolingbrook, who died in a car crash Saturday in Naperville.
"People who knew him speak about him and can't say enough nice things about him," said Karen Previti, PTA president of Builta Elementary School in Bolingbrook, where Adam attended kindergarten.
A letter was sent home to parents about the accident Monday, and children and staff at the school have been informed of the loss, Previti said tearfully.
"It's very, very sad. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Miller family," she said.
Indian Prairie School District 204 is working to try and help the children cope with the loss of their classmate.
"District 204 counselors were over there this morning," Previti said Monday. "All kindergarten parents were personally called this morning by PTA volunteers, and a phone call from Principal Randy Van Waning was sent to all parents of students in grades one to five," she said.
Adam was killed in a two-vehicle crash that occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday just south of Plainfield-Naperville and Bailey roads, according to Naperville police.
The initial investigation into the accident has determined that a 1999 Ford Contour being driven by John Miller, 46, of Bolingbrook had pulled over to the side of Plainfield/Naperville Road due to a blown front tire, police said. It was stopped in the road with its hazard lights on. Adam was a passenger in the vehicle.
Joseph Cox, 26, of Naperville, who was driving a Chevy Impala southbound on Plainfield/Naperville Road, did not see the disabled vehicle in front of him and struck the car from behind, the police report states.
"The severity of the crash required extrication of Adam Miller from the rear seat of the Ford Contour. The occupants of both vehicles were transported to Edward Hospital for treatment. Adam Miller was transferred to Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago where he died as a result of the injuries sustained," police said.
Both Miller and Cox were treated and released.
The accident is remains under investigation.
A private ceremony will be held for Adam, and memorial activities at the school are being planned, Previti said.
