Neuqua Valley High School musician Katherine Kohler was recently named a finalist in the U.S. Air Force Band's Colonel George S. Howerad Young Artist Competition. The competition is open to high school woodwind, brass and percussion instrumentalists in grades 10 through 12. Applicants from around the nation submitted audiotapes featuring a specified selection for their instrument. Four woodwind finalists, including clarinetist Kohler, were chosen and will perform Thursday to determine who will be featured as a soloist with the U.S. Air Force Concert Band on Feb. 22 at the Guest Artist Series in DAR Constitution Hall.
Kohler has been playing clarinet since she was 8. She performs in the Neuqua Valley High School Wind Ensemble and in the Neuqua Valley Symphony Orchestra. She is co-principal clarinet with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Encore Chamber Orchestra. For the past two summers, Kohler has played principal clarinet in the Birch Creek Symphony Orchestra in Egg Harbor, Wis., and earned a scholarship to return to the camp as an outstanding woodwind instrumentalist.
Kohler performs in the annual Illinois High School Association Solo and Ensemble festival and has earned exclusively first division ratings. Since sixth grade, she has earned a seat in each Illinois Music Educators Association festival. In January, she will perform at the IMEA All-State Festival in Peoria.
Todd Levy, principal clarinetist for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, is Kohler's private teacher. She also studied with David Boyd of Naperville.
