WVHS Receives Illinois
Innovation Grant
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Waubonsie Valley High School received a $5,000 grant to participate in the Illinois Innovation Talent Energy Reduction Challenge program. Students enrolled in Environmental Science will team up with students in Architectural Design to conduct an energy audit of the school's freshman campus. The goal is for students to identify ways the school can reduce energy demand and save money. Students will also be challenged to find creative solutions and make recommendations to district staff for implementation. The student's work will be shared by the Illinois Innovation Talent Advisory Board with other schools across the state.
District 204 Students Named
Presidential Scholars
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars and the United States Department of Education identified four District 204 high school students as candidates for the United States Presidential Scholars Program. Waubonsie Valley students Amelia Haj, Andrew Huh, Piali Yang, and Neuqua Valley student Ian Dimayuga have been selected.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. Each year, up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.
There are 3,000 students across the country that have been selected as candidates. A review committee will narrow the list to 500, and in April, the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars will name the final scholars.

Peterson Collects Supplies for
Operation Iraqi
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Peterson Elementary students and families packaged school supplies, shoes, and blankets for children in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of the national "Operation Iraqi Children" campaign. The non-profit organization was founded in 2004 by actor Gary Sinese and author Laura Hillenbrand. Its mission is to donate 100 percent of supplies or monetary donations to support children in war-torn countries.
For the past two months, Peterson parents, teachers, and children assembled hundreds of care packages from goods and materials collected. The donations will be sent to a warehouse in Kansas City and shipped to U.S. troops who will deliver the packages to children and schools as part of a goodwill program.
