When her son enlisted in the Army, Maree Russavage developed a new sense of awareness about young people who choose to serve their country.
Sgt. Zachary Russavage returned from a year in Iraq about 18 months ago. In that time, he developed an interest in working with medics, and he is now studying to be a paramedic.
If you go
Who: Neuqua Valley High School and community
What: Veterans honor ceremony
When: 7 p.m. Thursday
Where: Rotunda of the main school building, 2360 95th St., Naperville
Veterans and their families are the focus of the annual ceremony at Neuqua Valley High School, one that has extra special meaning to Russavage and her son.
"This is my gift to him," said Russavage, assistant principal at the school.
The public is invited to join the Neuqua Valley community as it recognizes and celebrates veterans during its annual honor ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Rotunda of the main school building, 2360 95th St., Naperville.
"It's more intimate than something in the auditorium," Russavage said.
About 300 people are expected to attend the event. The ceremony's keynote speaker will be Deb Rickert, president and founder of Operation Support Our Troops Illinois.
As part of the event, now in its fourth year, the school selects a theme for each ceremony. This year its "Family and Sacrifice."
Current Neuqua student Rodney Boyd, whose father served in Iraq, will speak about what it is like to have a family member in the service. Neuqua Valley graduate Tony Genovese, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, will speak about why he decided to serve his country and how Sept. 11, 2001, changed his life.
Also featured is World War II veteran Jack McCambridge, who recently took an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., to visit the World War II Memorial. Among those who greeted McCambridge at Midway Airport when he returned from the Honor Flight was a group of about 50 students from Neuqua Valley.
"The kids are going to talk about what it's like to honor a World War II veteran," Russavage said.
Other participants include a student giving the Gettysburg Address, along with patriotic music performed by Neuqua Valley students.
