Local Merit scholars named

Sun staff The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced that eight Naperville students are among about 2,500 high school seniors who have won National Merit $2,500 scholarships.
The following Naperville residents - including their probable career field and high school - are among this year's National Merit Scholars:
Adam J. Alongi, mathematics/physics, Benet Academy; Christopher Derrick, law, Neuqua Valley High School; Jessica P. Dong, biochemistry, Illinois Math and Science Academy; Anna C. Gormley, education; Naperville North High School; Sean M. Mills, physics, Neuqua Valley High School; Tara J. Shenoy, medicine, Naperville Central High School; Matthew R. Straus, law, Naperville North High School; and Steven H. Su, economics, Naperville Central High School.
Evaluated were each finalist's academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay describing interests and goals; and a recommendation written by a high school official.
These awards are funded by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. and are the second Merit Scholar awards announced this year.
