Waubonsie deserved better treatment
Good news! Waubonsie Valley High School ranked on Newsweek's list of the top high schools in the nation. Mr. West, couldn't you just say congratulations? You revealed your bias in your editorial as you turned something positive into a negative. You let your concerns about who did not appear on the list to overshadow Waubonsie's achievement.
Neuqua Valley was the only local school to rank on the list in 2006. The Sun responded with a headline and article full of praise. There was no comparison or scrutiny; just a positive and well-deserved recognition.
You stated that you did not intend to disparage Waubonsie's achievement, but you did with your backhanded acknowledgment and discrediting of Newsweek's list. Although it may be difficult for your patrons outside of the school community to know, based on this and other instances of The Sun's biased coverage, Waubonsie is an outstanding high school and deserving of positive recognition. Congratulations Mr. Schmid, staff and students.
Sadly, at this time when the focus should be on working toward consensus, your irresponsible commentary added fuel to the fire of dissension between the high school communities. In contrast to your approach, someone took the positive and appropriate action of contacting Newsweek to have the omission rectified. Neuqua Valley, Naperville North and Naperville Central are now on Newsweek's list. In spite of your comments attempting to tarnish this distinction, I would like to say congratulations to all!
