Summer stage production a real 'beauty'
July 9, 2008
The red brick building will be bustling with activity. Car after car will pull up, slow down, and people will get out and enter the newly refinished building. Eventually everyone will take their seat, the lights will turn down, the whispering will quiet, the music will begin and the curtain will go up. It all sounds very exciting, and with good reason. Aurora has a priceless treasure in the Paramount Theatre. Many people have enjoyed wonderful performances over many years within its walls.
Every July our local talent has its turn upon the Paramount's stage through the Fox Valley Park District Summer Stage program. Kids ages 7 through twentysomething turn out en masse to deliver a performance that seems technically impossible considering the number and variety of kids involved. Usually consisting of 200 to 250 kids, the Summer Stage shows are always family oriented and age appropriate. Arlene Hawks has directed the productions for many years. She is supported by a staff that is dedicated to both the art and the kids. The teamwork of the adults paves the way for the success of the product.
Summer Stage brings together kids from many different schools, demographics and backgrounds. A large number of the young performers return every year, forming friendships with kids outside their usual circles. Play practice might be hard work, but fun and social interaction are part of the experience.
As always in the two weeks leading up to the show, the practices increase in frequency and length. The kids and staff wonder how in the world they will be able to pull the show together. The atmosphere becomes tense, and the fun of earlier practices is replaced by perseverance to reach the greater good -- a show of which to be proud.
This summer, Beauty and the Beast comes to the Paramount July 19 and 20.
" Beauty and the Beast is all about love and acceptance, which are two things I think young people, and everybody, needs to think about... how we love and why we love," Hawks states on the Fox Valley Park District Web site. So many lessons to be learned in such a short time!
To see the culmination of these lessons, come see Beauty and the Beast . This year the costumes will be rented, and are anticipated to portray the characters well. Tickets are available through the Paramount box office for $10/$13. Call (630) 896-6666.
If the performances of prior years are any indication, we can expect a great show.
