AURORA -- The question had an obvious answer, but Mike Rogowski asked it anyway.
Rogowski, the Waubonsie Valley athletic director, held the Class AA Sectional championship plaque in his arm as the Warriors returned from shaking hands with Neuqua Valley after a 5-1 victory Thursday.
"OK, who wants it?" he asked.
Waubonsie Valley 5, Neuqua Valley 1
Neuqua 1 0 - 1
Waubonsie 4 1 - 5
First half - 1, Waubonsie, McClellan (DiBernardo), 4th minute; 2, Waubonsie, McClellan, (Rodriguez), 8th minute; 3, Waubonsie, Rodriguez (Green), 28th minute; 4, Neuqua, Ksiazek, 30th minute; 5, Waubonsie, McClellan (Rodriguez), 32nd minute.
Second half - 6, Waubonsie, Stahlke (J. Blake), 47th minute.
Shots - Neuqua 7, Waubonsie 15.
Saves - Neuqua: Suther 5. Waubonsie: Hanold 4.
Corner kicks - Neuqua 2, Waubonsie 5.
Yellow card - Waubonsie, McClellan, 33rd minute.
In unison the players responded, "Kiki! Kiki!"
"How about I give it to both?" Rogowski said, motioning toward Waubonsie juniors Catherine "Kiki" McClellan and Rachel Bostick, who were standing in front of him.
"No. Kiki!"
McClellan took the plaque from Rogowski and was swallowed up by her cheering teammates. The night - and now the hardware - belonged to McClellan, who scored three goals to pace the top-seeded Warriors (22-0-1) to their second sectional title in a row.
"She earned it," Bostick said. "You score three goals in a sectional final game and you earn it. We wanted to make sure she knew that. I've been playing with her for a while now, and she's got that talent. She doesn't always get that chance (to score), but we needed her to step up tonight and she did it. It was a phenomenal game for her."
McClellan, a defensive midfielder, entered with four goals before scoring her hat trick in the first half, including two goals in the opening eight minutes as the Warriors jumped on the third-seeded Wildcats (17-6) early.
"I was just so excited to play them again," said McClellan, who also said only her teachers and parents call her by her given name. "I knew they'd come out hard, but we came out wanting to win. It's always a good game against Neuqua because the (atmosphere) is so great."
Bri Rodriguez, who assisted on McClellan's final two goals, pushed the lead to 3-0 with her latest in a series of highlight-worthy goals. She scored from 23 yards out on a left-footed shot after she lost a defender by pulling up on a dead run in the 28th minute.
Neuqua showed some life in the 31st minute when Courtney Ksiazek scored on a free kick from 30 yards out. Ksiazek's shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and ricocheted off goalie Claire Hanold's back into the net.
But in the 32nd minute, McClellan restored the three-goal bulge on a 23-yard shot from the middle as Waubonsie took a 4-1 halftime lead. Ali Stahlke closed out the scoring with a header goal in the 47th minute.
"To be honest, we didn't feel out of it at halftime," Neuqua coach Joe Moreau said. "The players said it, 'They scored four, why can't we score four?' We did have some chances in the first half. We didn't get a whole lot in the second half, which we thought we would with the wind behind us."
The Warriors, who won their 20th consecutive game and extended their unbeaten streak to 54 (52-0-2), face St. Charles North at 4:30 p.m. Monday in a supersectional match at Benedictine University.
