District 204 students compete in math contest

Thirty-three District 204 students recently competed in a state math contest sponsored by the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America organization, according to 204 E-News release.
FCCLA is a national student organization that helps young people become better leaders in their families, careers and communities.
Rita Movelle from Neuqua Valley High School and Katie Dworzycki, Jenna Blazevich and Brittany Tobin of Waubonsie Valley High School received the top ranking of "Most Outstanding in State."
The Cornerstone Homeschool Math team successfully defended its state Division 1A high school ICTM Math title with a personal best score of 905.
The team won the Algebra 1, geometry, Algebra 2, calculator, junior-senior eight-person, freshman/sophomore and junior/senior two-person, and oral competitions April 26 at the University of Illinois. Forty-one schools were represented in the 1A division.
Individual champions were Chris Johnson - Algebra 1, Timothy Smith - Algebra 2, and Daniel Olache - Geometry.
The state champion team also includes John Bodett, Jonathon Dinsmore, Andy Duranceau, Lauren Gracey, Erick and Sarah Hillebrand, Graham and Jessica Johnson, Nathan Klein, Bridget and Fiona McCoy, Brendan and Matthew McMillan, Lisa Moyer, Keren Newby, Will Scritsmier, Jason Sommerfeld, Aaron Steigelmann, Landon Thompson, Michael Thrasher, and Michael and Peter Vilim.
In February, the team had won the 16-school Lemont Tournament and the 1A Division Regionals held at Joliet Junior College, which qualified the full team to compete at state.
The team is coached by Judy Sommerfeld and assisted by Hannah Johnson and Cindy Duranceau.
