www.suburbanchicagonews.com/napervillesun/news/1172736,6_1_NA19_METEA_S1.article Burglars target Metea work site September 19, 2008 By BILL BIRD wbird@scn1.com AURORA -- Burglars ran amok earlier this week on the site where Indian Prairie School District 204's new Metea Valley High School is being built. The construction site at 1801 N. Eola Road sustained an estimated total of $9,900 in damage and property losses after being broken into sometime between 5 p.m. Monday and 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to Dan Ferrelli, media relations director for the Aurora Police Department. Thieves apparently gained access to the site after severing a padlock and cutting through a section of a security fence ringing the property, Ferrelli said Thursday in a statement. That damage totaled $100. Two welders with a combined estimated value of $6,000 were stolen from a crane boom, Ferrelli said. The burglars also entered a trailer and stole an unspecified quantity of copper piping. Ferrelli said the value of the copper and the damage done to the trailer totaled $2,250. Investigators also noted two construction trucks were damaged by the burglars. One had its cargo latch cut open, while a gasoline-powered chop saw was stolen from the other, Ferrelli said. Those damage and property losses totaled $1,550. District 204 voters in 2006 voted to approve a $124.7 million referendum to purchase the land and build the 460,000-square-foot school. It will accommodate 3,000 students upon completion.

I am sure that I will get ripped in some quarters for daring to even mention this. I always wondered if something might occur to deley the opening of Metea in the nature of the above story. The parents of the current NV freshman slated to move to WV would love for MVs opening to be delayed so their kids can stay at NV. After what I saw at some of the meetings I wouldn't put it past some people. It is not so far fetched.

The papers all too often report such supplies being stolen from construction sites so it's not uncommon.

It seems like there has been a lot of vandalism (I am assuming by kids) in the past few weeks all over the city. Mailboxes, lights being broken, beer being taken from refrigerators in garages, etc.

There has been a rash of mailbox vandalism in the papers in the TG area - is this people from elsewhere getting back at them for something ? Really, this is a statement that if I lived in that area I would find offensive. For those looking for when the rift can begin to heal - I guess I wouldn't hold your breath.

If you really believe this would be caused by NV parents you really need to wake up. But based on the tone of this board of the past year, I shouldn't be surprised. I guess no one has been paying attention to the news about copper being ripped off from construction sites all over the city. Last I saw, TG and WE didnt have any means for selling scrap copper.....Give me a break. Thanks for attempting to heal the wounds.

Doc I didn't say I expected it and hoped it wouldn't happen. I just meant it doesn't surprise me if something like that did happen. You and I both saw the anger at those meetings by a select few as well as a ridiculas lawsuit to keep from attending WV. And as far as the rift healing look at the blue board and the anger and bitterness. It goes both ways. I do hope it was kids.

I can tell you the Countywide (DuPage) vandalism is up, along with burglaries to cars (Most unlocked)....I am sure the same holds true for Will Co. and Kane Co. Also sad to say, but most of the vandals/burglars are local....... The incident reported at the school site is also, unfortunately, common at any large construction site. I would find it very hard attribute the Metea site incident to current NV people for the reasons of delaying the project.

It's not right to take one person's post and associate it with the whole tone of the green board. Do you see others jumping on the bandwagon and agreeing with this hypothesis or merely responding that there always have been and always will be people stealing from construction sites? In any case, it's rotten people take stuff from sites and cause damage, but I have not heard that this particular incident will cause any delay whatsoever for MV. While I know some would like the opening to be delayed for various reasons (including many of the kids who will be seniors at WV next year) I do not think for one moment this has anything to do with that.

Like I said something like that wouldn't surprise me though I ope it wouldn't happen and others also have has similar feelings. I am talking about a very few and you are right this wasn't. But based on the anger and belligerence and the lawsuit a number of people would like to see the opening delayed. As far as healing the district look on the blue board whose members find nothing wrong with equaling the SB with the Devil incarnate.

It sounds like many families are preparing for next year. As mentioned earlier, construction theft is unfortunately a common occurance. And copper is a typical target. Rember the good old days when construction didn't need a fence around it? Well, even with a fence, thefts occur. Here's a couple of other things too look out for: - theft of copper wire from street lights - theft of air conditioner parts (I can't recall if there's a lot of copper wire, or something else) These items are easy access for thieves. This type of theft in increasing in many areas, including ours.

Acually major, it would surprise me if it were determined it was from a group in the NV attenance area, for the reasons you stated. Yes they were contentious at the SB Mtgs, and yes they filed the lawsuit, but to break the law in the manner described in the article. Even they would not stoop that low. My experience (23 yrs in the Crime Scene Field) is that it sounds like career burglars.
Let's also lighten up on Blue board this or Green board that (that is meant for all, not singeling you out major).......We are all here for the betterment on the entire district.

One last thing, it seems that those who are tired of TG or Fry being singled out for the behavior of a few should understand that one or two posters is not the entirety of this board. Many of us respect Fry and TG and ask for the same respect. Please do not paint all of us on the green board with the words of a few.

Since the price of copper went up there have been many thefts of copper building materials; there have been many reports of thefts from abandoned homes across the country. Thefts are also routinely reported in our local papers albeit in smaller print on one page. A high-profile location gets its own column and headline. Naive? - maybe. This is my personal take on this.
