Monday evening was the first of several monthly meetings that Jim Schmid is holding at WV for MV parents.
We received a handout that has a drawing of the front entrance of the school and one overlooking the cafeteria and courtyard areas on one side and lots of information on the other side. I should have scanned this when I was at home but may have time to type it if anyone is interested.
There wasn't a lot of new (to me) information but it was still good to be there and hear what's going on. There were about 80 people in attendance.
Mr. Schmid introduced the MV athletic director, Tom Schwier (not sure how to spell it) and the LMC director Deb Turner.
We were shown various logos that are being considered and given a chance to give opinions on them.
We were shown the building and site layout, and drawings that show which parts of the building will be complete when it opens versus by Jan/Feb 2010. Field preparation is beginning now so some of the grassy fields will be available next fall.
There are approximately 2500 on the MVHS listerv.
Assistant principals will be hired, then department heads and lead coaches.
Staff and student parking spots will total 1050, which is about 200 more than WV and in line with what NV has.
PTSA organizational meeting 11/20 Sports booster organizational meeting 10/14
There were several questions about all sorts of topics including marching band, sports, music program, classes with low enrollment, LMC books.

From the handout
* MVHS will open in the fall of 2009 as a freshman/sophomore building with about 1300 students - roughly 650-700 students will be added for each of the next two years. It will be a comprehensive high school similar to NV and WV
* Of the 1300 anticipated MVHS students, roughly 600 present 9th graders will transfer from WV, and 675 present 8th graders will attend from Granger (250 students), Hill (340 students), and Still (80 students) Middle Schools.
* Students in the established boundaries will be expected to attend their designated school.
* The MV staff will begin with about 90-95 certified staff members. We anticipate about 75 of these stafff members moving from positions in District 204 schools. About 45-50 will be added each year for the next two years.
* Teacher interviews will begin in October with most decisions made prior to winter break.

* The school will be completed in two phases with the majority of the building and grounds (Phase 1) finished by August of 2009, and Phase 2 completed by February of 2010. Phase 2 includes the completion of the junior/senior wings, the auditorium, the swimming pool, the wrestling room, the music wing, and some athletic fields. We will make the necessary adjustments to the facility and programs to ensure that curricular and extra-curricular student needs are met regarding these unfinished areas.
* We plan to have comprehensive curricular and extra-curricular programs that closely mirror the other high schools in the district.
* Athletic teams will compete at the freshman and sophomore levels when the school opens in 2009. MVHS will be aligned with the UEC similar to the other two comprehensive high schools. Individuals will be allowed to compete in the state tournament in sports that are established that way by the IHSA - i.e. track, wrestling, swimming, etc. Varsity level team competition will begin in the fall of 2010.
* Other areas such as music, theater, speech, marching band, Model UN, etc. will compete at the appropriate level depending on interest and ability Department chairs and sponsors will have input into these decisions. Activities for clubs and organizations will be based on interest, ability, and overall participation.
* Parent organizations will be established for athletics, music/theater, and PTSA.

Just posted on the MV site (http://ipsdweb.ipsd.org/Metea.aspx) are the FAQ's that slt already typed up: ipsdweb.ipsd.org/News.aspx?id=20068and a September update from Jim Schmid(http://ipsdweb.ipsd.org/News.aspx?id=20071): Mustang Community Members: “Metea Valley construction is ahead of schedule!!” Todd De Paul, Construction Manager for the MVHS project, recently responded to one of my many questions. If you have not driven by the site, I hope you will find time to do so – the speed and expertise of the many professionals working together are exciting to observe. Also, updated pictures of the building’s progress are displayed on a regular basis on the MVHS web site, ipsdweb.ipsd.org/Metea.aspx. I enjoyed the opportunity to interact with about 150 community members during our 9/22/08 Parent Meeting in the Waubonsie Valley Auditorium. I began the meeting with introductions of Athletic Director Tom Schweer and LMC Director Debbie Turner. Following brief remarks from them, we showed a PowerPoint presentation of the site and building layout, including Phase 1 and Phase 2 completion timelines. I also asked group members about a couple MV logos we were considering. After the short presentation, we addressed questions from the audience for the remainder of the meeting. I truly appreciate your involvement and the opportunity to clarify some of the potential inaccuracies that may accompany the building of a new high school. To assist on-going communication, I distributed a one page synopsis of answers to commonly asked questions. This Metea Valley Parent Q/A information and the future meeting schedule are also posted on the web. I will interview for the Assistant Principal positions in the next two weeks, followed by department chairs, deans, lead coaches, and certified teaching staff – extremely important, exciting, competitive, and time consuming. As the leaders are named, I will introduce them to you at the monthly meetings. A reminder of the initial planning meetings for our Athletic Boosters -10/14/08, 7:00 pm, at the Central Office and for our PTA - 11/20/08, 7:00 pm, at the Central Office. Enjoy the success of our Cubs and Sox, the changing leaves of autumn, but, most importantly, Go Mustangs!! Jim Schmid Principal, Metea Valley

-------- Original Message -------- Subject: [MVHS-NEWS] Meeting Cancellation Date: Thu, 18 Dec 2008 08:46:05 -0600 From: Schmid, Jim <jim_schmid@IPSD.ORG> Reply-To: Schmid, Jim <jim_schmid@IPSD.ORG> To: <MVHS-NEWS@LISTSERV.IPSD.ORG>
Good morning – with the impending snow and ice forecasted for late afternoon and early evening, I have decided to cancel the MVHS Parents Information meeting scheduled for this evening at 7:00 pm in the WVHS Auditorium. I intended to present the new department chairs and deans, but we can do that at the next meeting scheduled for Tuesday, 1/20/09 at 7:00 pm in the WVHS Auditorium.
Thank you for your understanding – I hesitate to cancel, but I would rather error on the side of safety, especially this time of the year. Enjoy the holidays with friends and families – you deserve it!!
