Teachers awarded grants for innovative teaching
Daily Herald Staff 10/3/2008
The Junior League of Kane & DuPage Counties announced its Grants for Innovative Teaching during its September General Meeting at Geneva's Riverside Receptions and Conference Center. Each year this program awards a number of $500 grants to teachers who present outstanding student programming in Kane, DuPage, Kendall, and Will Counties. This year three grants were awarded to the following area teachers:
Beth Boland, Child's Voice School, Wood Dale
Project: Let's Get Physical with Science
This project promotes scientific reasoning in early childhood students who are deaf or hard of hearing by engaging them in active experimentation. Children perform hands on experiments relating to physical sciences and attend a Simple Machines field trip at the Kohl Children's Museum.
Beverly Frett, Robert Clow School, Naperville
Project: Who wants to be a Webographer?
Through this innovative program, Webographers photo document learning as it occurs daily throughout their school. Students in 1st-5th grade are taught how to use a digital camera and to preview and edit photos using computer equipment. When photo opportunities arise, they can check out the camera to document events. The photos are edited and added to the school's Web site to tell the story of the learning that is happening at the school.
Sally Becker, Evergreen School, Carol Stream
Project: Blooming Earth Garden
The Blooming Earth Garden is an outdoor classroom that provides an exciting hands-on learning experience across all grade levels and covers several school curriculum areas such as science, writing, math, and art. Students learn the importance of the Illinois prairies to the State's past, present, and future by studying plants, grasses, and bushes native to Illinois. By the end of the school year, students are able to identify the difference between living and nonliving things and have a solid understanding of plant and animal growth.
"Improving the lives of children in our communities is a major focus for us and we are pleased to once again be able to recognize and support the innovative ideas of teachers who share this vision," said JLKD President Tracy Rogers.
The grant program welcomes applications from teachers employed full- or part-time at any public or private school serving students in grades K-12 within the four county areas (Kane, DuPage, Kendall and Will). For information and application materials, call 630/653-5989 or visit www.jlkd.org.
The Junior League of Kane & DuPage Counties, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
