Dollars for Scholars holds essay contest
October 14, 2008
Sun Staff
Illinois high school juniors and seniors have the chance to compete for scholarship awards in Illinois Dollars for Scholars' fourth annual Lincolnland Legends Essay Contest.
Up to 19 finalists will be selected from entries received. The winning essay from each Illinois congressional district will earn a $4,000 scholarship. The top two essays from this finalist group will earn additional scholarship funds for the writers. This year, the writer of the state's top essay will receive a $12,000 award, and the second place writer will receive an $8,000 award.
In honor of the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birthday, this year's Lincolnland Legends program asks students to nominate an Illinoisan who reflects the characteristics Lincoln demonstrated as one of our nation's greatest leaders - courage, vision, ambition, compassion, decision making and leadership.
Each of the 19 Illinoisans who are selected for the title of Lincolnland Legend will, in addition to being honored at a ceremony next spring, have the opportunity to award a $500 scholarship in his or her own name to the Illinois high school of their choice.
Contest information also is available at www.illinois dollarsforscholars.org. All essays must be received by Dec. 1 by mail.
The celebration gala honoring the Lincolnland Legends and their student nominators will be held April 4 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield. Invitations will be issued to the essay contest winners, Lincolnland Legend honorees and contest sponsors. All scholarship awards and Legends recognition will be presented at the event, with tickets also available to the public.
Sponsorship opportunities are still available. Businesses, civic and charitable organizations, as well as individuals interested in sponsorship, can contact Dick Dystrup at 888-255-9140 for more information.
