What do you think can and should be done to help students with the social aspect of the transition? We have kids going through a variety of transitions and for those who will be joined by new classmates next fall it would be nice if there were some way for them to get to know some of the kids ahead of time. Two of my kids have been through the "Gold Rush" held at North Central College. I don't know that they really got to know any of the kids from the other schools there but at least they were exposed to each other...
We have these groups of 8th graders.
Current 8th graders heading to MV next year (all of whom would have gone to WV if not for the new school).
Current 8th graders heading to WV next year (some of whom would have been going to NV if not for the new school so maybe this one is two different groups of students).
Current 8th graders heading to NV next year (all of whom would have gone to NV if not for the new school).
A common thread is that many 8th graders are facing the fact that some of their good friends will be going to a different HS. And that quite a few are going to a different HS than they expected to attend.
Then there are this year's 9th graders.
NV students staying at NV
NV students moving to WV
WV students staying at WV
WV students moving to MV
What are the needs of these groups of students and what should the schools do and what should the PTAs and PTSAs of the MS and HS do to make this a more positive experience for all? Should there be some sort of events planned for next spring and/or summer? What would be or would have been helpful for your students, if anything?
Those going to an existing building have the opportunity to visit the building and get comfortable with it. Those heading into the new building won't get to go inside until close to the start of the school year and it will be just as new and unfamiliar to staff as it is to students. If there is any onsite event at MV it will have to be very close to when school starts.
