Waubonsie off to the races
By Neil Shalin | Daily Herald 11/22/2008 :
It was a great start for Waubonsie Valley at Friday's state swimming meet preliminary round at Evanston.
In the first event, the 200-yard medley relay, the Warriors finished second, which turned out to be an indication of big things to come.
"We had four good swimmers in that race," Waubonsie Valley coach Tom Schweer said. "The kids make a pretty good team. They're tough."
The 200 medley relay team consisted of Julia Carroll in the backstroke, Megan Sellers in the breaststroke, Elena Carvell in the butterfly and Andrea Baumgartner in the freestyle. The second-place finish in the relay behind defending state champion Rosary puts the Warriors in good position for today's final round.
Later, the Warriors finished fifth in the 200 freestyle relay, which included Carvell, Shelby Daeschner, Vicki Munson and Baumgartner.
"We have depth, and we're competitive," Baumgartner said. "I'm optimistic about (today)."
Carvell finished second in the 100 butterfly in 55.86 and Sellers was fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.63.
"Elena is a big-meet swimmer, and Megan has really done a good job in her freshman year," Schweer said.
Baumgartner finished eighth in the 50 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay team also placed eighth. Both will race in today's consolation round.
Sarah Galvin of Benet finished second in the 100 backstroke, and the Benet medley relay team finished sixth.
Naperville Central's Erin Lamb was sixth in the 200 freestyle.
"If there's an award for hard work over a four-year period, Erin has it," Redhawks coach Jon Carlson said. "Nobody in the history of our program has consistently killed herself in practice like Erin does."
Wheaton Warrenville co-op's Danielle Reminger finished fifth in the 100 butterfly, and Jessica Wellick was sixth in the 500 freestyle.
"Whenever one of them gets in the water first and has a good race as Danielle did today, that sets the tone," said Wheaton Warrenville coach Jacob Ayers. "That happened here and at sectionals when Jessica had a great swim early in the meet."
Downers Grove North's Adrienne Bicek won the 200 IM and set a state record in the 500 freestyle, finishing in 4:46.66
