I see too many kids walking to and from school in the winter with their coats open and no hats or gloves. We used to wear those head, face things, gloves and were perfectly warm enough.

No school today. Check the website for info about activities. I assume it is because of the weather and tempatures. What a bunch of weak ones we have become. I remember growing up (I am in my 50s) and we went to school in -20 weather. I remember walking to school those days on the frozen snow; it was fun. Around here it is very rarely as cold as -20 degrees. I don't know about the situation with your school, but I know that we have the possibility of problems with the buses due to the severe cold, the chances of kids waiting outside for long periods of time for the buses, and kids who walk a mile or more to school. None of this seems very safe on a day this dangerously cold IMO. I think closing the schools on a day like today is a worthwhile precaution. I was surprised this morning to see that it was -15 with a -36 wind chill. That was even colder than forecast.

My brother and I got in trouble once when my parents were out to dinner and we were playing in those glorious snow hills in our yard. The wind chill was 80 below zero. We were bundled up and it didn't bother us. But MS and HS kids can't bundle up like that to go to school. They would have nowhere to put boots and snow pants once they get there.

We have so many kids in our district who walk to school,. And so many kids who take the bus. I agree, the extreme temps really would have been tough on their bodies. So I understand why the canceled school. Yesterday (yes snow was an issue), my MSer waited extra 20 min to get picked up because the bus was running late. And the pickup (like it is for many) is around the corner so you cannot wait inside the house and look for the bus to be coming. I am glad she didnt have to chance having that extended wait this moring. brrrr! One issue: this was end of the term. My HSer had two tests scheduled today (maybe quizes). Both were in classes that very well could effect the final grade. (right on the grade borderline in both cases). She studied hard for them last night. Will these be made up? "Arrrgh" she said, "first I have to worry about three big finals over my Xmas break.....now I have to worry about these two tests over my MLK day long weekend " What bad weather luck!

I think we are much more vulnerable to bus delays because of our 3 tiered system. If they run late for the morning high school run due to a bus not starting or stalling somewhere, it snowballs for the 2 routes that follow.
I was ok with the cancellation today. When I got the call this morning, I turned on the news and they were showing an actual (not windchill) temp of -27 at the Aurora airport. No one should be out waiting for a bus in these temperatures.
