Neuqua Valley Junior Katherine Kohler has been chosen to perform as a soloist with The United States Air Force Concert Band during the Guest Artist Series on Feb. 22 at DAR Constitution Hall. She was selected by the conductors and performers of the Air Force Band.
Applicants from all over the country submitted audio tapes of themselves playing a specified selection for their instrument, and four woodwind finalists were chosen. Finalists were invited to perform live in Washington, D.C., in a recital format that was open to the public.
Kohler has been playing the clarinet since age 8 and performs in Neuqua's Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, Kohler plays co-principal clarinet with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and Encore Chamber Orchestra. For the past two summers she has played principal clarinet in the Birch Creek Symphony Orchestra at the Music Performance Center in Door County, Wis., and was awarded a scholarship there as the outstanding woodwind instrumentalist.
Kohler has played in numerous solo and ensemble festivals, receiving all first division ratings including a "Best of the Day" award, and has been selected for IMEA festivals each year since sixth grade. This year she will attend the IMEA All-State Festival. She studies with Todd Levy, principal clarinet of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Santa Fe Opera. She also studied in her early years with David Boyd of Naperville.
